Audio Post - Indhak kaadhal - My composition - Narayanan Venkitu's lyrics

this is an audio post - click to play

Narayanan Venkitu, a multi-talented and widely known fellow blogger, had come up with some nice lyrics for which the musicians of blogosphere had given very nice tunes. This is my tune for his lyrics. Did not think much about the tune, just sang as it came in my mind. Guess I am heavily influcend by MSV-SPB style. Your thoughts ?

Audio Post - Aayiram kaNNumaay - Malayalam

this is an audio post - click to play

A song which is dear to my heart as much as my mom is. Has a special place in my life. Due to various debilitating reasons, I have not seen my family (mom, dad and kid sis) for 4 years. And this song reminds me of the tender moments that we have had personally. For a family that is strongly knitted by love, this gap is eternity. Hope to see them at the earliest and praying for the same.

SPB's greatest songs - My perspective

SPB - needs no intro. There is hardly any south Indian who does not love him (including malayalis). It is simply impossible to overlook his gargantuan contribution to the field of film music. SPB = playback and playback = SPB. A self-styled gentleman and a self-taught genius. A colossus both in sight and performance. Darling of the masses and music directors alike. It is almost an impossible task to list a few melodies of SPB here and classify them as the list that I love the most. Really speaking, the list of "Best of SPB songs" depend strictly on the mood.

  • When you feel languid, "nilaave vaa", "kELadi kaNmaNi", "thene thenpaaNdi" or"thanga nilavE unnai urukki"- will top your list.
  • When you feel resurgent with manly hormones peaking, you want to hear "namma ooru singaari".
  • When you feel naughty and romantic you pick "andharangam yaavumE". when you feel lovingly romantic you pick "nandhaa en nilaa".
  • When you feel sad, you could pick "pOguthE pOguthE" or "paadi parandha kiLi"
  • When you want to connect to he almighty you may pick "aayar paadi maaLigaiyil"
  • When your mood is classical, you get "Omkaara naadhaanu santhaana" from shankaraabaranam.

What is not there? one may wonder. There is nothing left for the mortals who followed him to experiment and find out. He has pretty much written the encylopaedia of playback singing. So, when I say "SPB's greatest songs", it becomes imminent that I mention in what context I am writing the list.

The context here, I would loosely put, as technical prowess. Technical prowess is a combination of multitude of factors - expression (bhaavam), enunciation (azuththam), pronunciation (uchcharippu), modulation (brighas and sangathis), breath control (moochchadakkam), ease of singing (paadum eLimai) , maintaining the scale (shruthi shuddham) and so on.. The list that I present here is more of a perspective. It concentrates mainly on the songs that have tough modulations ( brighaas and sangathis) to sing. These songs are a listener's delight and a (lesser) singer's nightmares. They challenge the singer to go beyond his perceived ability and perform. In my case, they both inspire and intimidate me. They inspire me since I learn new techniques and intimidate me because a the flow is not yet natural which is absolutely important for singing. Or in other words, I "enforce" these sangathis in my singing, whereas SPB sings "naturally". The gap can be lowered only by pressing the gas pedal on the practice.

Although I very well understand that it will be impossible to improve beyond a particular point (Well, adhukku mEla improve paNNinaa, genius kum namakkum enna vithyaasam ?), I just keep pushing myself into these songs by listening, contemplating and humming all the time. Let us first see the list of such songs which push the singer's threshold.

Top 10:
======

  1. Nandha nee en nilaa
  2. Enakkoru kaadhali
  3. Mazaiyum neeye
  4. KadhilE mEgama ( Telugu from movie Laila)
  5. ThErOttam (NuvvEna in telugu)
  6. Nalladhor veeNai
  7. KadavuL amaiththu vaiththa mEdai
  8. RaagangaL 16
  9. Niththam niththam en kaNNoram inbak kanaa
  10. Kamban yEmaanthaan

Next 10:
======

  1. IlakkaNam maaRudhO (tempted to include it in spite of being a duet)
  2. Maan kaNda swaragangaL
  3. Radha kaadhal varaadha
  4. Geetham Sangeetham
  5. ThiruththEril varum (a duet)
  6. Pon enpadho poovenbadho
  7. Mazaitharumo en mEgham
  8. Naan eNNum pozudhu
  9. Kadalil alaigaL thondrum aanaal
  10. Theerththakkaraiyinile therku mooliayil

I have already tried a few songs of SPB in my blog. I am planning to try a few more from the above list.

I will be similarly coming up with a list for my other favorite singers:

  1. K. J. Yesudas - my maanaseega guru :)
  2. Jeyachandran - singer par excellence whose voice SPB envied (his remark)
  3. Ajoy chakraborty - Bengali singer and one who I worship :)

Audio post - Un paarvaiyil Oraayiram

this is an audio post - click to play

In the rush of using Cool Edit Pro's limited time offer, I sang quite a good number of songs and stored them in the hard drive. This is one of them. A marvellous MSV-ish type composition from IR. I think there are three versions of this song - KJY solo, Chitra solo and yet another version which I do not remember. TO me it is a pretty tough song with a lot of sangathis (high paced and spaced modulation). The songs has an interesting line:

kavidhai naan
ri ni pa ri...

ezuthuvEn
ga sa da ga..

If you try to play them in the keyboard in C scale, you will find that every alternate white key is pressed.

Have tried to render it as well as possible. Pass your comments.

Audio post - Neelavaana Odaiyil

Got inspired to sing this beautiful song. Have tried to do as much as SPB has done. Towards the end I loosened myself a little bit and sang some improvised stuff.

Audio Post - Thikana Na -Bengali Song

Today I felt like trying something absolutely adventurous - I would say. The song I you hear here is "thikana na rekhe" sung by the Bengali singer - Haimanti shukla. A few months back I was introduced to Haimanti Shukla through this song. It was instant addiction / love / attraction - whatever it is - she has become my most favorite singer these days. Her songs are soaked in emotion and each note spills melody.

With No disrespect to Lata I can safely say that Haimanti touches my heart better than Lata in spite of the language. I know hindi very well but I seem to be happier with unknown bangla of Haimanti rather than known hindi of Lata. For starters - Haimanti is the singer who sang with Yesudas the hindi song - "Kahan se aaye badra". Her soulful singing with the golden voiced KJY made me listen to it infinite times and later when I got more songs of Haimanti I grabbed them with both hands.

To understand one song of Haimanti takes days. And to reproduce the nuances takes weeks ! Her effortless ease in singing and soulful rendition transcends language barriers and touches the hearts. I know absolutely no bengali (or bangla) but I sat to learn this song with the diction.

I have tried my level best to render it as she has done. I have added small aalaaps at the beginning and end of the song which was not in the original just for a wholesome feelingThere are some glaring mistakes that I can recognize myself. I think I can rectify them only if I am Haimanti myself or probably her student.

Audio post - Geetham Sangeetham - Testing Cool Edit Pro

Anand Prabhu had suggested that I use cooledit Pro for recording songs. Just thought I would try his suggestion. This song is from the movie kokkarakko originally sung by SPB. If I can get 10% of his varied expressions, I will consider the effort decent. Towards the end of the song, I have unknowingly accelerated a little bit. Well, amateur..
