ReplyDeleteSurprised that you show up here :) Well, I am in ajob with Public health dept here. Still ballting with thesis :)
I am familiar with that website. Thanks.
Murali,
ReplyDeleteJnaana Soniyam nnu sollara !! .. Never mind .. I keep my ears and eyes open to anything interesting, music being one of them, in my otherwise wayward life !! ... I confess that your site is too good for my almost non-existent knowledge on music, nevertheless I did enjoy all your ramblings on the orchestrating the programme in Atlanta.
BTW: Good luck with your job. Bala sends you his wishes as well.
I'll keep a tab on this site atleast to see if you claim that your Ph.D entails you to thookify yezhu malaai and cross yehzhu kadal. ;-)
murali, honestaa sollunga. PSusheela nallavaa paadinaanga? orE koral nadu nadungudhu. High pitch pogavE mudiyalai. Srudhi bEdham :-(
ReplyDeleteIf you have not accompanied her, it would hv been a worst show.
JR's mama mama song is ok.
anyways, good attempt.

ReplyDeleteA general occurrence on a stage show is the occassional shruthi loss for any singer due to multitude of factors like audio system, over-practice and sometimes age. If you had listened to "brindhavanamum", when I sing pullankuzalisai - I am blatantly off-scale ? Reason ? 3 days of non-stop practice with insurmountable tension to give a good show. Thankfully, I could recognize immediately and corrected in the rest of the notes.
Susheelamma had trouble even to walk and get to the car since she is 70 now. All the social obligations like parties that she had to attend before the show, I guess, weakened her to a good extent and she probably went a little off. But at 70, I guess I will not be able even talk properly leave alone singing :) I would certainly say she had aged gracefully.
Maharajapuram santhanam towards the end, used to deliver "bo shambo" due to audience's persistence. When he reached high notes, he would understand his struggle, and just raise his hand up towards the audience in a gesture to make them recollect the earlier renditions of the same song at a much a younger age.
I think people of Atlanta and I enjoyed susheela's singing in a similar context.
Murali,
ReplyDeleteyes .. she sang perfectly many songs
You should have heard her singing in Chennai in a recent concert
ny god. She sang so well and it was 10.40 Pm and people wanted more
Dear MS, I am with you on the list of factors like age (70), audio, over-practice, hall echo, stage environment and so on. What I want to put across that PS' singing now-a-days is more than uncalled-for with her precincts and constraint due to aging; and she should be a prime orientation for the new cohort of singers, with her affluent jewels of unique originals. But choice is left to her.
ReplyDeleteA fan of her for last 30-40 years would still be paying attention to watch/listen to her on stages. But the current generation people would be bewildered listening to her stage songs. This happended with me too :) A nippy exemplar is Kannan ennum mannan perai. What a song it was (I mean the original) and I can't believe it now and sooner I was switched off.
I prefer to use the CDs of her originals of 60's and 70's and enjoy; than spoiling my own admiration for her by participating in her stage shows.
No intent to impair you and your attempt (in truth good). Above this, no felony destined to the songstress too.

Hi Murali !
ReplyDeleteNew year greetings to you.
I again wish to share my sensation about PS’ rendition in the recent "5 in 1 – SPB, PS and few more". Trust you found time to listen the songs rendered by her. I was absolutely saddened except for “Darling darling”song from Priya. I wound my own ears by listening to. It was awful.. terrible.. what else to say
She was such a songster at her peak time between 1958-1972/73 and there was almost no film with no songs of her all through that era. She ruled the music planet with her enthralling singing flair. Obviously when becoming old, one must be gracefully exit from the panorama and be converted into a high-quality motivator for the younger generation. One quick example is the one and only SJ. She is relaxed now after her retreat. But PS?
Listen to “enna enna vaarthaigaLo”sung on the stage. SPB appreciated the music but definitely not PS’singing. A troupe singer could have easily sung without pain in her throat. PS repeated the 2nd charanam as she messed it up earlier. What a song it was formerly and how she spoiled it now. Take any other song like “Pakkaththu veettu paruva machchaan”, “MadhamO aavaNi”, “Chittu kurivkkenna kattu paadu” etc. She find extremely difficult while in lofty tone. At least the program coordinators should have advised her to select songs best suited for her current scale.
I also like her way of singing (I mean original), but now, my taste for music will fly off, if I prolong listening to her current theater performed songs.
I know that her fans would like to bite me, but I am sure that you would accept to do a favour. Please advise PS when you talk to her next time appropriately to be there as a unpretentious pioneer in TFM and to retire from stage singing. May God bless you !!
