Audio post - Geetham Sangeetham - Testing Cool Edit Pro

this is an audio post - click to play

Anand Prabhu had suggested that I use cooledit Pro for recording songs. Just thought I would try his suggestion. This song is from the movie kokkarakko originally sung by SPB. If I can get 10% of his varied expressions, I will consider the effort decent. Towards the end of the song, I have unknowingly accelerated a little bit. Well, amateur..

Jo and I were discussing what makes the professional singers..professional. In case of SPB, I have hardly seen any portion of any song of his rendered without dedication. Every note of every song, be it old or new, is given complete attention and crafted.

This is exactly what we amateurs need to imbibe, in my humble opinion. Concentrate on every note, every nuance that the song has to offer and try to reproduce exactly. Such copying actually improves listening and rendering ability.

But this brings the good old question : "So do we have to be copy cats ?"

The answer is yes and no. We need to be copy cats to develop an ability to reproduce the exact lines the composers may make us sing. Copying tendency improves concentration. It reinforces the ability to catch minutest of the microtones. But, you may go ahead and improvise the song as you please, the only condition being you should be able to sing exactly if asked for. Such a flexibility will make you enjoy your songs a lot. My friend Sriram Laxman says, the great SPB himself knew every song from Kannada, telugu and hindi (rafi) before he ventured into film industry. He could sing exactly as it was when asked for. He later crafted a style of his own and prevailed.

  9. Murali,

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.!

Absolutely perfect ( IN tamil - pisire illai.!! romba pramadham).

Used to be one of my favorites during school days !! Between the last time I listened to you sing and now..there are tons of differences in your voice and the recording sounds a lot better.!

Your thoughts about SPB/ mimicing etc. are correct.

I went to 2 SPB concerts last year here. Telugu first and tamil the next day. His singing style, devotion and expressions were absolutely fascinating to me.!

I couldn't control my emotions when he sang - Vedham aNuvilum oru Naadham song from SALANGAI OLI. Absolutely stunning.! I am glad I was born in his era.. Glad to have heard IR's compositions at his peak.!!

Now, even glad to be amidst such wonderful singers and composers like you.!!

Where is that new Keyboard of yours?? Thought you'd use it in your songs.!!

  13. hey your voice is good. Am getting more impressed with every new song I hear...

try some of the challenging ones of SPB : "thanga thaamarai magaley" was one of the song where it is tough to identify his voice in first stanza and is considered a challenge by lot of singers..

SPB in a good mood on stage is unbeatable. I rmeember ssing a Rahman's concert where Rahman had chosen 4 singers - SPB, Hariharan, Kavita Krishnamurthy and sujatha. It was impromptu improvisation by Rahman on Piano with all these singers.

SPB started with "anjali anjali" and went beautfilyy over the humming (originally done by chitra) and passed his mic to Hari. Hari did a decent job - of dheemi dheemi.

Next came Kavitha - sahikkalai. KaatrE en vaasal vandhaay - she struggled and had no idea about shruthi. Sujatha did a beautiful job too.

Off all these 4, SPB level engEyO irundhadhu. Pure gift from God.

    Anand:

Earlier I did not use to concnetrating much on the expression. These days I concentrate a lot though achieve only miniscular :)

    vinesh:

You are an IR fan. You must be loving SPB in this song's original. Man - he is fluidy. inga oru charaNam paadaradhukkuLLayE moochchu vaangudhu.

    sukhanya:

thangath thaamarai magaLE is something only SPB can do. I am not very good at changing the texture of voice and singing. That is why I choose the soft numbers of SPB. SPB maadhiri "namma ooru singaari" ellaam ennaala paada mudiyum nu thONalai. My good friend rajaG (kansas raja) is very good at such numbers.

This song rendition was very nice. You defnitely have a great voice, good range, very versatile and good control no doubt.. But in certain songs you have some obvious differences from the original track - like 'nilavu nee..' in vedham nee(pallavi), 'kAlidAsan..,' in neela vAna Odayil(charanam), a few to mention.. Wondering if you listen to these back and try fixing it later or may be 'coz you probably registered it differently in your mind it appears right to you.

Very good obsvn. I usually take the 'essence' of the song and sing it. Sometimes my evil inner-self adds or subtracts something from the original. It happens unconsciously. IF I make a consciou effort, I may probably be reproduce the original exactly - as a replica. But to me, somehow such rigorous replication does not provide me with much fun.
