Felt like singing this wonderful KJY-IR song which came in the early years of IR. Have been singing a lot of SPB stuff these days and felt like my maanaseega gurunaathar was saying "dEi, enna en paattellaam practice paNradhilliya ?" (assume JKB or maarththaaNdam piLLaivaaL here). So..
It is often said that KJY has a bad tamil pronunication. Though it is true that he sang therukkOvilE Odivaa, it is unfair to single him out as a person with pathetic tamil pronunication espcially when he has rendered 90 % of the tamil songs with clear pronunciation. In fact, there are many songs which challenge even the best singers in terms of pronunications - two examples are "vEdham nee" from kOvilpuRa and "gangaikkarai mannadi". Vedham nee is also paced at a breakneck speed. Just look at these lyrics:
Try saying these lines fast (dont have to sing):
அண்டம் பகிரண்டம் உனை அண்டும் படி வந்தாய்
தண்டை ஒலி ஜதி தருமோ கமல பாதம் சதிரிடுமோ
He has delivered with such a clarity and precision and it will be unfair to him bad at tamil pronunication. For that matter, SPB had many slips all the way which went a little unnoticed (Susheela and PBS had their fair share too).
SPB had difficulty in pronuncing "ள" properly. Example - mangaiyrail magaraa"ni", in nallathOr veeNai - "vaalnthida puriguvaiyO". But these errors have gone largely unnoticed. It will only be good that these wonderful artists not be chastised for these any more since they really learnt the language as they grew and delivered with clarity as they grew in stature unlike the current vEdhana sargam or udit who have absolutely no idea what they are singing. Shreya has a much more acceptable pronunication than the above two.
Let me know what you think about my rendition.
wow.. that was amazing... i think intha paatu paada.. u need goood breath control too... neenga atha superaa control panni irukeenga... total control of the entire song..
ReplyDeletea very nice rendition... :)
Awesome !!
ReplyDeletethat was a bountiful treat.. very well sung... beautiful control of the raagam, taalam and the tempo. Amazing natural crystal clear voice..that was the best part to me. I could hear the depth and the perfect feel and bass in the voice. :)

ReplyDeleteYou are a gifted man ! WAY 2 GO !!
BLESSES WITH GOOD LOOKS, Grey matter that works like the big time, and the gift of music to top it all. I am sure you will make it real big someday, sooner than you think you would.. Keep up the good work. I'll wish you GOODLUCK as always dude ! Look forward to more audioposts !!
STANDIN OVATION !!! YOU'RE DA MAN !!
First about your rendition - Fantastic efforts - Couldn't see any slip anywhere including pronunciation.! Wonderful song selection too, very challenging as you've written.
ReplyDeleteKJY - Yes, he did have a few problems occasionaly, but his voice just smoothed them out, IMHO. Tamil not being his mother tongue, singing such songs would have certainly been a challenge. But, He certainly cameout with flying colors.
SPB - Until you mentioned this, I didn't know about his slips.!!
Shreya/Sonu etc. They suck big time with prononciation.!! Sometimes I wonder why the MD's allow them to sing like that.!!
That said, Chitra was superb I thought though she was from Kerala and even Unni Menon, Jayachandran for that matter.!
That shouda read "BLESSED WITH GOOD LOOKS" .....ALL THUMBS TODAY @#%^&@#
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of pronunication ;
ReplyDeleteHere is classic tongue twister. KJY's carnatic training must have helped him in a lot in this speed recitals.

its not easy to sing and you have done a good job.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteYour voice is fantastic.
I am a great fan of SPB. I do sing at TNCSC(Tamilnadu cultural society of Canada) functions in Toronto. I love to sing SPB songs and I enjoy being on stange.I sing only with Kareoke, there is no music band for us. Its really difficult to sing with kareoke, even small miss shows very bad on stage. I try my best to make it look good.
I never leart music.( ellam kelvi najam than). I will try and post it in my blog.
Catch up with you some time.

ReplyDeleteI have no idea what your current profession is, but you better get your ass down here and start recording.
Many times a bad pronunciation actually does wonders for the song.

Murali,
ReplyDeleteYou should try all the old songs of SPB and post it in ur blog. That will be amazing.
I have also added few pictures from TNCSC functions in my blog. Check it out.

Thanks for writing about me in your blog. Looking forward to your songs.
Hello, Murali. Awesome singing! I stumbled on your blog by accident and our family has heard your Vedam Nee a dozen times!
ReplyDeleteI guess you are in SC. Would love to meet you and hear your singing in person! We are in Greensboro, NC. We are die hard Dassettan fans and were fortunate to attend his kutcheri in Raleigh few months ago.
My husband is an wonderful (though very shy) singer and he needs a lot of coaxing. I am made a modest attempt to record and share
Santu Sings
Take care!
-Mini
Dear mini,
ReplyDeletethanks. It will be really nice if we get to meet for a music session. Let us see if we can do that in the future. Santhosh sings very well ! Beautiful bassy voice! Very nice to meet another singer here. Since you have put an ayyappan song, I am inspired to sing one and share with you here. I will probably choose one from the album "gangayaaru" and put here.
Really class Murali. You have used your own style of singing, not having influenced of KJY's singing style. Esp, the line iLaya thendral kaatrinile iniya sandha pattinile. However you maintained the quality of song's melody as we enjoy in the original.
ReplyDeleteDo you a thought on attempting Nilave ennidam nerungaadhe sung by PB Srinivas. Very nice song.
I was wonder-stuck while listening to Mini's husband Santhosh's song. It is almost like KJY's voice. Mini, he must try giving an album of his own. May be Murali can extend his arm. Who knows... it will click like anything. All the very best.
ReplyDeleteThanks Swami. will try nilave ennidam nerungaadhe in the future.
ReplyDeleteI will see how santhosh and I can work together.
wonderful...simply superb...
ReplyDeleteMurali..Awesome man! I thoroughly enjoyed the track.
ReplyDeleteHi murali,

Song - Amudhae Thamizhe

I've been looking for this song for a long time.
Murali:
ReplyDeleteI just got to your blog through googling for a song by Jayachandran. You have done a great job in all of your audio & other posts..please keep it up. I am also a carnatic music fanatic (however I like lighter versions of the carnatic/hindustaani raagas) and am now learning with a small keyboard. Your Motif post has inspired me to go back and complete a small tune I am composing in Amrutavarshini.
Please keep blogging and I will be anxiously waiting for your posts...
Cheers,
Krishnakumar
Murali:
ReplyDeleteKK here again. Did I mention that two of your malayalam posts (me-am a mallu)pramadavanam & sangeethame were fantastic. Hey how did you manage to pronounce malayalam so accurately? The sangeethame song was a craze in gaanamelas in our colleges as the troupes used to showcase their star singer on that one. As for pramadavanam, usually noone dares to even attempt that song as it is hard (esp in a music function-situation) to keep the sruthi & the calmness in the severe noise at a function. I should say this is the first time I am satisfied with another version of the song. You have sung it to the best possible level...good talent...keep it up.
Cheers,
KK
I chanced upon your blog. (This blog thing is rather new to me) The name manappathivu gives a very claming effect to the manasu.
ReplyDeleteThe song you rendered 'vedham ...' is really quite amazing. really don't understand half of it but it seems like it was sang with so much of sincerity.
Thank you and wishing you all the best.

Krishnakumar:
Thanks for dropping by. PLease share your song in Amrutavarshini here. Will be more than happy to listen to a fellow composer's creation.
I usually work on the diction of the languages that I sing in. I can understand malayalam to a good extent too. As far as pramadhavanam is concerned, there are a few mistakes that I have done, but thankfully they are not as blatant as I understadn from the feedback.
Sangeethame - I got this track from kansas raja. Since I do not have a formal background, I pretty much taught myself all the swara sthanams using Yesudas' semi classical mallu songs. Sangeethame was just an audacious attempt which thankfully did not turn out intolerable :)

though it is classical it is actually a romance song :) Thanks for stopping by.

Dear Murali,
ReplyDeletegreat comments on your blog. I have been trying to get the lyrics for Vedam Nee (IN ENGLISH) - do you have them? or do you know where I can get them?
Sorry, I meant to add that I need these lyrics in English for a dance performance. Thanks!
Thanks,
