Kavidhai arangerum nErum

Song : Kavidhai arangerum
Film : Andha 7 naatkaL
Originally sung by : Jayachandran, S.Janaki
Composer : MSV

Performed by: Murali, Meera

This song is the most popular number from andha 7 naatkaL. A complete and true melody with a cascading structure. I have discussed this song elsewehere. I made a simple karaoke track and have attempted to sing with Meera. I have cut off many interludes and kept it simple just for the fun of singing. If you hear it, please drop a comment.

  1. Wonderful. you guys have an amazing voice. Hmm i have a small reuest - I want to hear you sing "Kakai Chiraginilae" from ezhavathu Manithan (one of my favourites) and i am sure your voice will suit very well.

Excellent work on the karokee track
right from the tabla to the gentle chord sustains in the background.
I felt the tempo was little fast, but guess its the same way in the orginal not sure.

    And well sung 2 :)
(your voice reminds me of singer Mano in his starting days)

Btw Did you use midi work for the tabla ?

Good way for me to end my workday
    thanks :)

I am looking forward to hear your other original peices :),I am sure the orchestration will be interesting.

  8. to all: - thanks for your valuable time here.

    Karthik:

Thanks. I love "kaakkai chiraginilE" too. But I have a gut feeling that Jo's voice is going to do better justice than mine. Let us see.

The compositions for blogswara are being finished up. you will get to hear them soon. And I anticipate your comments with eagerness after you hear.

    NV:

I bought the swarshala package for MOTIF ES. They contain tabla samples and many other indian instruments. I choose the appropriate tone, construct the beat and sequence. Even the harmonium that you hear has been played on Keyboard.

    Nandu:

Spot on in observations. I really welcome similar comments form other fellow bloggers too.

Well.. Normally, a lady's voice sounds great if she sings in the scale G,G#,A. A guy sounds good anywhere between C to D. (Exceptions like Janaji, thyagaraja bhagavathar are not being talked here). This song is originally set in the scale of F#. But to suit our needs, we pulled it down to F and this did indeed affect our performance. But it is just for fun..so it is fine.

In my composing experience till date, most of the songs I have done had been suitable for guys mainly. Most of the film songs have ladies using their falsetto..and inherently the tendency had been to compose high pitched songs. Now I am trying to unlearn the process so that I can make lady singers sing comfortably in theie own scale and sound melodious rather than shriek at the top of their falsettos. I recognize the importance of having to compose songs which suit the singers. I will ensure that I dont make my singers scream from the bottom of their lungs :)

  10. Nandu,

    Couldn't agree more..

Duets are generally a thing to look out for especially when the female counterpart doesn't have the best of ranges !! And I for one is definitely in that category.

Some songs sound so good when just heard but sound so awful when sung, probably since the transition from the normal/original voice to falsetto cannot be masked unless one has done it so many times over! Moreover, the falsetto is also thinner and hence difficult to have control over. Probably the reason why many people sound so lame/unsoulful (due to the lack of stength in the voice) & flat (lack of control).

As to the song you have suggested-- was one of my all time favourites mainly 'coz her voice sounded just like hers, was thoroughly enjoyable yet with Bombay vikings maintaining his comfort zone.

One more singer whom I find totally delectable is Shubha Mudgal-- awesome base voice, but yet to see her stretch her limits as far as scales are concerned. She's totally into her pitch, comfortable and I totally welcome that!
