Poththi vechcha malliga mottu - with Vidya

Song : Poththi vachcha
Movie : maNvaasanai
Singers : SPB, Janaki
Composer : Ilaiyaraja

Performed by : Murali, SriVidya

This song famously picturized on Revathi as she comes winding down a climber/creeper in the backdrop of a snakey violin piece from the Maestro is one of the classics. SPB and Janaki gave heartwarming renditions. Along with Vidya, I have tried to recapture a miniscular percentage their great performance.

Vidya is already a familiar name with regular audiobloggers. Backed by a solid classical training, she has sung wonderful songs like kaNNamoochi Enada and ooru sanam thoongidichu. She has a sweet voice along with a good range and her renditions are usually bhaavam rich. A tamilian based outside tamilnadu almost all her life, she is making rapid instrides into getting comfortable singing in tamil.

  5. Superb Murali / SriVidya.

Your voice and rendering needs no mention...its awesome as usual and you've handled the signature SPB laugh nicely indeed.

Sri vidya - Amazing voice..superb singing. I've listened to her in her blog but this duet is awesome.

Only thing I missed - IR's background. Especially the Thavil sounds..before Malayila kaathu...man..that cannot be replaced with any other instrument.!! IR is GOD.!

  6. Murali/Srividya:

Excellent singing both of you..Murali, you sound differently good in first 2 lines of the song.

I want to share my experience about this song..My baby-sitter took me to this movie when I was 8 years old. What a baby-sitter ??!!:-) For some reason, I remembered this song very vividly..Then fast forward to the year 2002. I had an opportunity to meet actress Revathi and ended up doing a road-trip with her for 3 days when she visited the US. Very soon, we ended up yapping so much that I was tellig her my man vaasanai-babysitter experience and how clearly I remember the song and her expressions and blah blah..Same evening, we played the song and she ended up doing the dance sequence for the song...Interesting song to remember.

  7. Murali:

    Good Job- smooth delivery! Initial 2 lines in the 1st charanam have slightly different notes in your version. Guess this is what you expected me to find out (-;
Also, "konjam mudugu theykkavaa" has been very well rendered.

    Srividya:

    Nice bhaavams in the song.

Long lost song brought to the forefront! Kudos to u guys for that...

  12. Murali one of your best performances. You see to have applied yourself seriously. Some small pitch issues there in last pesi pesi though. Srividya also has sung very well and as usual excels in bhavam. She could also have done even better if the small out of control sudden highs were not there. But small issues.
Overall a fantastice duet. Your voices are also balanced very well. As NV has said, the karaoke track is very ordinary and midi like so we miss the I.R touch. But we know that it's very tough to get karaokes! Keep the good work up.

  13. Hi, nice rendition. This is one of my favorite songs. Has the sound track created in midi? Do you have the midi version? If so, can you send it to me at sripathyramesh@hotmail.com?

Pradip chetha --- You better check your ears, provide correct feedback. The female singer timing is completely off and the male singer is flat most of the time. Help them become better singers.

  16. Dear Anonymous. I understand that you respect me and that's the reason for your calling me chetta.I respect your love and affection for me too. But would have been better if you could have revealed your name. No need to hide when you comment.I agree what you said is right about pitch. First understand the context of my comments.Murali and Vidya are not pro's. I have heard them many times through different songs and have been harsh on them many times regarding pitch and other issues.
So when they do better than what I have heard before from them it requires mentioning. This does not mean that what they have done is absolutely right. My ears have understood all the flaws here. They will understand my pat and also the inner criticism within.I do want them to improve. They constantly comuunicate with me and I have given them advice many times. So a sudden spurt of strong words here is unwarranted as they and me do understand their short comings. Anyway murali is an aspiring music director rather than singer, so I hear whatever he sings in this contest.I have already said this before.Hope you understand :-)

Pradip chetha - What is in a name ?. What is said is more important. If you not provide correct feedback any singer who read this think it is fine to do this way. the context is murali as a singer because that is what he had done here.

  18. thanks for all your responses.

aravind : that was a nice anecdote

    meera : yes. dot on.

anon : guess u found my rendition flat. let me see if I can improve in the future renditions. if I cannot, may be I have stagnated.

I know I am listening to ur version of 'pothi vecha' very late. Sorry for that. But, better late than never, right?
This is one of my favourite songs. And a nostalgic one too.
Thanks Murali and Srividhya for choosing this song and reminding it to me.

  20. Murali - Your rendering is good but cannot call as the best when compared to your old renderings. Probably you have not been practising for a while. For a new listener this should have been good. Vidya has done very well. Looking for more duets from you both.

    Hi Murali ,
this is my first time visit to ur blog. heard this particular one. Although SPB & Janaki's voice could never be compared or equalized, the female voice was a good one. Looks like u did ur best but , the lines : "maalaiyida kaathu alliyirukku, thali seiya nethu solliyirukku" was'nt the right way ....
