Song : Malare Mounama
Composer : vidyasagar
Movie : Karna
Singers : S. Janaki, SPB
Performed by : Sowmya, Murali Venkatraman
I think it was in late 90s. SPB after recording a song excalaimed to the director of the movie "90s la vandha songs la indha maadhiri endha paattaiyum naanum jaanaki ammaavum anubavichu paadinadhillai. dhayavu seydhu idhai nalla padam aakkunga"
That song was reasonably picturized and became the face of the great composer Vidyasagar. A total Raag- Darbari pujari, he churned out many melodies in the same or similar scales without ever sounding stale or repetitive : nee kaatru naan maram, malaikkaatru vandhu. A composer whose melodies have the strength to stand the test of time. A composer who is regarded by SPB as one among the best he has worked for.
Sowmya of ragasudha got introduced to me probably a year or two back. She is a consistent performer as you would see in her blog. Here I team up with her to present this song in our voices after quite a long break.
SPB has stamped his class all over in this wonderful song. Every time he sings malare, the modulations are different. This extreme creativity can neither be reproduced nor be acquired by hard work. One simply needs to be born blessed.
Hi Murali,
ReplyDeleteI've been a regular to your blog for a long time.. a great fan to your music! Great work dude.
This song in particular is good. Brought back my old memories.. :) Thanks to you and Sowmya.

Murali and Sowmya
ReplyDeleteBeautifully sung! Your voice is very well suited for this song!
Murali:
ReplyDeleteYour melodious, sweet, soft voice absolutely suits this song. I would rather have you get a Ph.D in Music than a Ph.D in Chemical Engineering. You have a good chemistry with Music.
Nalini.
ps: I kind of have to agree with Ramya on Sowmya's contribution. But please Sowmya, dont take it bad. Sowmya is a great singer.
Hi Murali,
ReplyDeleteLong time... welcome back.
Its a beautiful song.. I did hear some of sowmya's songs .. i am not much of a knowledgable person in singing.. but as a music fan.. i think sowmya could do much better.. just ease out sowmya... it looks like u r straining a lot to catch it..
as abt you murali.. as usual given ur best ..
i think if both of u want to give a duet.. u need to work on the sync a lil more.. one needs to pick it up from were the other left .. there seems to be a gap in the way u guyz swing between u two.. if u know wat i mean!!
kanavu kandu entha kangal moodi kidanthen.. ithai sowmya konjam high'a edutha maathiri irukku.. adutha line neenga konjam low'a edutha maathiri irukku...
otherwise.. its a good try.. good to hear you too..
all the best
Murali and Sowmya....very nicely done indeedd...dude..long time...super nice to hear something from u after a long time...also karaoke plzz (lol)..
ReplyDeleteI'd disagree with some others- I can see the talent in Sowmya's singing- brighas very well executed, the feel is also in place. Only thing to be taken care of is the slight extra shake IMHO.
ReplyDeleteMurali, real good job.
awesome rendition murali..as always. its awe inspiring to hear your voice glide thru the song with such ease.
ReplyDeletepls find time to post more songs here.
Hey Murali and Sowmya, I really love this song very much and I enjoyed your singing it too...I don't have much music knowledge other than I enjoy music in every form....It is for enjoyment and I thoroughly enjoyed your song...Keep it up and keep adding more....Keep up your good work Murali...Hatz off to you....

capt sanjay gahlot
good job with this song...this has been my all time favorite....sowmya has done a fantastic job...you've done a good job but IMHO after listening to your pothi vecha malaliga mottu and other songs...I have a feeling that you could have given more bhavam to this song...looks like you've tried to bring in a carnatic element to it...otherwise great job by both of you :)
ReplyDeleteWhat SPG and S.Janaki did with 'Malarae Mounama' is a tough act to follow or reproduce.... but very well attempted devitaing a little and giving your own touches... Sowmya's rendition could have been better
ReplyDeleteYour voice is so melodious and soothing. Really enjoyed!!!!
ReplyDeletethank you all of you for listening.
ReplyDeleteSorry that i am late here...Anyway am glad that i listened to this one!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful composition by Vidyasagar..an unfogettable melody!
There is a set of people which is completely against imitating the original song in all its aspects..I dont know Murali if you are one of them because you seem to have sung this very differently from the original.I did not enjoy those extra sangadhis in mounama and vedhama..
I liked the way u sang "degam vaazhndhu vandhadho,"sugam ulloorudhe(1st time)"..simple but beautiful..and the way u have sung mouname vedhama at the end of the song was brilliant!romba rasichu paadirkenga!
Soumya has a different voice..the sangadhis were spot on..maybe a better diction wud have helped..
These are sincere opinions of a listener..Please ignore if i am wrong!
Another good performance guys..sorry I am only now starting ot hear all these wonderful blog songs and you must excuse my 'excited' comments!.
ReplyDeleteVery brightly sung by Sowmya .. and adequately complemented by Murali. Well done with creativity.
Modulations are plenty in our music and my only comment is that the modulations we give should conform to the pattern and more importantly feel natural to the voices we have. Modulations that feel 'natural' to SPB and Janaki may not feel natural to us as our voices are totally different. As you said Murali .. I agree it is God's gift in the case of SPB..no other way to explain it really!.
I prefer to hear modulations that the voice feels totally comfortable expressing .. you have great potential to use your mellow voice to express soothing gentle modulations without being excessive Murali.
I enjoyed it and I hope I am not writing too much!.
