This song was composed for the documentary on Shri S. Rajam - the legendary carnatic singer. The song is set in a lighter style but using a rare ragam called "maararanjani". The kriti "maa

laaginen vElaa unnai" set in this ragam was popularized by Shri. S. Rajam.

This song was composed for the documentary on Shri S. Rajam - the legendary carnatic singer. The song uses a grahabhedham from Mohanam in C scale to Kamaprabha in C# scale. 

Kamaprabha is also known as shEkharachandrikA and is a janya, of ShubhapantuvaraaLi. This song is not included in the original DVD due to time constraints.

This song follows the notes of another rare raga Gangeyabhushani in which there is one known tyagaraja kriti "evvare ramayya". Unfortunately this song could not find a place in teh DVD but the director was kind enough to let this song be associated with the DVD and be released online. Karthik Nagarajan's mellifluous voice is the highlight, in my opinion.  A tribute to the Carnatic Legend S. Rajam - Sakala Kala Acharyar.

Prof. Hari Krishnan's  brillaint lines capture the very mission of Rajam's life.  Rajam popularized all the vivaadhi ragas which were once considered taboo or ill-healthy inducing.  He expounded all the 72 melakrathas, performed in vivaadhi ragas extensively and lived till 90 !

 My favorite song from the 5 I did for the project "Rajam - Sakala kala acharyar". A blistering rendition by Adithi Devarajan in the raga Gamanashrama. It was a privilege to tune the poem of Prof Shri. Hari Krishnan and have one of my best musical friends Adithi sing it.

    பலமழியும்; நோய்கூடும்; ஆயுள் கேடு
மூடுகவாய் என்றெல்லாம் சொன்ன பேர்கள்

While making of the documentary on the legendary carnatic singer S.Rajam, Lalitharam Ramachandran gave me an opportunity to tune 5 songs in rare ragas for the chaste-tamil poems of Shri. Hari Krishnan. These songs were used to embellish the movie which predominantly contains Shri Rajam's music. Tuning the 5 "viruththam" was quite a task. Let us know if you like them as we release them one by one.

Music For Documentary on S.Rajam - Sakala Kala Acharyar

After publishing 2 books - one on G.N.Balasubramaniam and the other on Palani Subramanyam pillai , my good friend@Lalitharam Lalitharam Ramachandran ( carnatic music critic and biographer ) has finished his documentary on the legendary painter-musician Rajam. I am sure this documentary is going to be added to the music libraries of India as an important reference.

Happy to have played a small part in this project by composing a few songs (sung by Adithi Devarajan , Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam and Karthik Nagarajan). Release slated on the 11th of November, 2012.  People in chennai are warmly invited.

We present to you a song based on Ragam Varnarupini composed by me (Murali Venkatraman).



Ragam Varnaroopini is a rarely used ragam in Carnatic.  Its aarohanam / avarohanam  is as follows:

S  R1 G3 P   D2 S
S  D2 P   G3 R1 S

Equivalent notation in hindustani (aaroho / avroho) would be:

S  R1 G2 P   D2 S
S  D2 P   G2 R1 S

In the carnatic domain, the only song in this ragam that I am aware of is Shree paadham rendered by Nithyashree Mahadevan. In films, this ragam has been handled extensively mainly by the great composer Maestro Ilaiyaraja in a variety of songs like :  Azhage thamizhE ( Movie : Kovil Pura) , neelakkuyilE unnodu naan (Movie : Magudi) and edhilum ingu iruppaan (Movie : Bharathi).  All these expound the raga in its pristine form. 

The other songs which I am aware of using this ragam partly are "Brahmakamalam" from the malayalam movie Savidham (Composer : Ravindran) and "sindhooram peydhirangi" (composer : Johnson) both rendered by Dr. K. J. Yesudas and "Man Bhi Hai" (Composer : Monty Sharma) in the hindi movie Mirch rendered by Bela Shende.  While "Brahmakamalam" is based pretty much on this ragam,  its lyrics  mention malayamarutham which is a close to this ragam. 

"Man bhi hai" on the other hand, uses this scale only in the mukhda (pallavi) and later strays away.  This ragam sometimes is also referred to as Shuddha Dhaivat Vibhas in hindustani genre - an excellent rendition of which by Swaradhish Bharat Balvalli available in youtube. 

This song is a semi-classical based in ragam Varnaroopini in the voices of Swati Kanitkar and Hricha Mukherjee - both highly accomplished singers who have won many episodes of SaReGaMa.

Lyrics have been penned by Sajeev Sarathie - the author of "Ek Pal kii Umr lEkar" - and lyricist.

Lalita's Dance at Pattum Bharathamum Concert

In English for those who are unable to read tamil:

A poor peasant sees baby Krishna sleeping under the hood of the venemous serpent Adi Sesha.  The peasant gets concerned that the venom may affect Krishna  by making him dark, hot and thirsty.  He wonders if Krishna, after giving away all his wealth is unable to buy a bed for himself.  With kindness he offers Krishna :" Oh Krishna ! Come to me ! I will make yuo a bed of flowers and cotton".  (Here I have used the reference to Sudhama which is  poetic license since Krishna donates wealth to Sudhama, not as a baby, but as an adult).  When I composed this song, I had the image of Shri. PithukuLi murugadas singing to baby Krishna in mind.

 

ஒரு ஏழைக் குடியானவன் (விவசாயி) குழந்தை கண்ணன் பாம்புப் படுக்கையில் படுத்திருப்பதைப் பார்க்கிறான்.  அவன் மனம் பதறுகிறது.

"அடடா..குழந்தை கண்ணன் இப்படி பாம்பின் படத்துக்கடியில் படுத்துக் கொண்டு இருக்கிறானே ! அந்த பிஞ்சு உடம்பு அந்த நெஞ்சின் சூட்டை எப்படித் தாங்கும் ?" என்று எண்ணுகிறான். 

"ஒரு வேளை கையில் இருக்கும் பணத்தை எல்லாம் நண்பனுக்கு தானம் கொடுத்துவிட்டானே ! அதனால் கையில் மெத்தை வாங்கப் பணம் இல்லாமல் பாம்புப் படுக்கையில் படுத்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறானோ ?" என்று எண்ணி:

"கண்ணா ..ஏனப்பா இந்தப் பாம்புப் படுக்கை ?  என்னிடம் வா..நான் பஞ்சும் பூவும் வைத்த மெத்தையைத் தருகிறேன்" என்று அன்போடு அழைப்பதாக இந்தப் பாடலை அமைத்து இருக்கிறேன்.  (இங்கே சுதாமனுக்கு தானம் கொடுத்தது என்பது மிகுதியாகச் சேர்க்கப்பட்ட விஷயம். ஏனெனில், கண்ணன் குழந்தையாக அல்ல, நாடாளும் மன்னனாக ஒரு முழு ஆண் மகனாக வளர்ந்த பின் தான் சுதாமனுக்கு தானம் செய்கிறான்.)



இந்தப் பாடலை இயற்றும்போது திரு பித்துக்குளி முருகதாஸ் அவர்கள் குழந்தைக் கண்ணனை நோக்கிப் பாடுவதாக நான் மனதில் உருவகப் படுத்திக் கொண்டேன்.  நீங்களும் செய்து பாருங்களேன் !
