It is indeed daunting to look back and reminisce.
It was August 3, 1998 when I was picked up by CECRI seniors Dandy (Anand Durairajan) and Bend (Venkat Srinivasan) from the Metropolitan airport of Columbia along with Gump (Gomadam Manavala Parthasarathy). As we were driven down the streets the first thing that struck me was the sun shining brightly even at 8:30 pm - a thing unheard in tamilnadu. It may be worthwhile to recap that my first ever flight experience was international, which was not unusual for the Indian bourgeois in 90s. ( The visible resurgence in wealth started in India only after 1999).
Columbia was a small city and the roads were well laid out (which later I understood is just a basic feature of a developed country). From then columbia had become my second home whether I liked it or not.
There had been a lot of good and bad memories associated with this city as the boyish mind of mine grew manly. Circumstances which subjected me to a treatment akin to the heat treatment of iron. But, I guess it was all for good in the end.
I have met some of the most wonderful people in my life here. To name each and everyone and detail their impressive character will take a series of articles (which may not be of interest to many either). I have derived many lessons from various people from various walks of life and I am eternally indebted to all those who have positively influenced my life.
When I leave Columbia, and possibly USA forever, what I take with me is a better chiseled character and invaluable relations (of course financially the stay was hardly rewarding). With the core of my personality shaped by the people in Columbia, I believe I am ready to take the plunge in unknown territories (Melbourne and Berkeley).
Thank you Columbia for giving me the opportunity to learn, both for my professional and personal life.

Thans for the enquiry. kaLimaN uruNdai will help mooLai grow. But aRivu will not grow, only mudi will grow. May be my friend Dr.vEthALa moorthi can answer your question.

some tips:
Instead of sodium cholride, the recent chemical called vector chloride can be added for taste. If you are not very particular about the direction which you should face while eating, you may try scalar chloride.
Also, instead of ghee, castor oil can be used. It helps "clearing" the digestive tract which may be blocked because of the excessive intake of kaLimaN uruNdai. It is probable that a US company will patent this and claim the recipe is indigenious. Please donot restrain yourslef from informing Dr.Mashelkar about it if you find an infringement of such sort.

does anybody know how to make raththa soup ? thx.
* From: vetti (@ ts006d34.har-ct.concentric.net) on: Mon Sep 25 00:02:05 EDT 2000
Velaiyaththavan, Thanks for that extra tip about about castor oil. It will also be very helpful to the bulimics who like to purge somehow.
Recipe for Halaal raththa soup:
Crush 5 pounds of plump-as-rambha tomatoes and pour it in a saucepot. The seeds can be removed to make a smooth soup. Leave the seeds to get a crushed bones texture. Add 1 litre of spoiled milk and 1 pound of mouldy parmesan cheese.
Place the saucepot on the stove and bring the liquid to a boil. Stick your finger in to check the temperature. If you are not sure stick another finger. When you have made sure it is boiling dice up a pound of black soggy onions and add to the liquid.
If you wish you can dice up and add any leftover stale and rotten vegetables to the liquid. I personally would prefer adding those vegetables because it adds to the nutritional value of the soup.
Let simmer for 30 minutes.
Now comes the best part, adding the raththam. You can add any raththam you want. It is left to your imagination. But since this is a Halaal recipe you have to pray to your favorite God and add 2 bottles of Shingar Santhu Pottu. Then add salt and pepper to taste. Stir well and let it simmer for another 30 minutes.
While the soup is simmering, boil a few whole ears of corn. Take some really stinky karuvaadu and fry it in oil to bring out the aroma. Remove the saucepot off of the stove and pour it into very large serving bowls. Let a whole corn float on the each bowl of soup. Then top the surface of the soup with the stinky karuvaadu. If corn is not available you can use rat meat. If karuvaadu is not available you can use karappaaan from under your kitchen counter.
This soup is very healthy, very inexpensive to make, very flavorsome and colorful. Being Halaal makes it even better.

Recipe for Maayaandi Vilas Digri Kaappi:
----------------------------------------
First we have prepare the water used to make our Digri kAppi.
Fill up a plastic bucket with cold tap water. Use this water to mop your kitchen floor at night before you go to bed. Do NOT sweep the floor before mopping it.
Rinse the mop in the bucket of water and squeeze the excess water back into the bucket. Be careful not to waste even a drop of water. After you have finished mopping, cover the bucket of water with a plate and refrigerate it. If you forget to refrigerate, then the water will ferment overnight.
adhAvathu buckettil irukkum thaNNi puLiththu nurai thatti vidum. sila pErukku puLiththa kAppi pidikkum. avargaL puLikka viaththu kAppi pOttu kudikkalAm.
Next day in the morning boil the prepared water in a steel pot. Depending on the color and consistency of the prepared warer the boiling point may vary. Since the tempearture (in degrees of course) varies every day depending on the water this is called "Digri kAppi" (now you know how it got its name).
Use the boiled water and prepare kAppi with your favorite kAppi podi and sugar. Do not use milk because the moment you add milk to this coffee the milk will split. But if you like it that way you can add milk. This is called "thirinja Digri kAppi".
This makes a a very strong, tasty, thick (even without milk), aromatic (oh yeah) kAppi.
Special tips:
- Use an iron bucket while mopping, this adds irumbu chaththu to your kAppi. This will make you strong as irumbu.
- Use a piththaLai bucket and the kAppi will add polivu to your mEni.
- Reuse the bucket of water for one full week every night and then make kAppi and offer it to your guests, this kAppi will be so strong and tasty your guests will praise you like hell.
- If you make this kAppi in the morning and keep it out in the sun all day and drink it at night, it will act as an aphrodisiac....hubba hubba.

maayaandi - that was great pa. oru chinna tip. For extra "flavour" we can add some amount of the water prepared for "vaasal theLikkirathu" - you know what it has - some saththulla substance like...yeah.
you can add kolap podi too. after all, it will not make it worse.

Claire, here is the recipe for 'yAnai thuthikkai chips'. First of all you need to get hold of an elephant (you may confirm this with your hubby, 'yAnai' is 'elephant' in English). Most importantly, the elephant needs to have a trunk (check this out too). Once you have managed to do this (which is no mean task), kick yourself for getting the idea of 'yAnai thuthikkai chips'.

Please donot restrain yourslef from informing Dr.Mashelkar about it if you find an infringement of such sort.

does anybody know how to make raththa soup ? thx.
* From: vetti (@ ts006d34.har-ct.concentric.net) on: Mon Sep 25 00:02:05 EDT 2000

Chenthar Mizhi - With Rashmi Nair - A tribute to Sahana
Song : Chentharmizhi
Movie: Perumazakkaalam
Singers : Madhu Balakrishnan, Chithra
Composer : M. Jayachandran
Performed by : Murali Venkatraman, Rashmi Nair
It is rare, in the current trend of predominantly cacophonous songs, to find a gem which emphasizes the beauty of classical ragams. Sahaana is on such ragam and M.Jayachandran is one such great contemporary composer. He may rightly be termed the successor of Raveendran. Deep classical knowledge and high creativity distinguish him from the rest. His songs in the movie perumzakkaalam are wonderful and he has mixed hindustani and carnatic styles throughout the movie. The movie itself was a beauty and the music just elevated it.
When this song came in my mind, I asked Divya if she would be willing to sing it. She told me " Chetta - I have already sung this Murali Ramanathan !" (See here). The most comical thing is that I had commented on her blog about their rendition myself. Such is the state of my great memory. Pradip can tell some other stories about my memory too :) So I thought may be rashmi would be interested and here it is.
When I started listening to the song I was wondering why Madhu had imparted a heavy dose of classicism in the brighas and sangathis. I expressed this to Rashmi and she said : "that is because it is a duet between iyer aathu mami and mama". Then I saw the video and subsequently saw the movie too. Frankly Madhu's voice in this song is like how dew covers the garden smoothly in a beautiful morning - it can hardly be felt by the leaves, flowers and the trees. But it is there in all glory. The rendition is supremely serene and inimitable. I told rashmi - "I dont think I will be able to do a great justice to the song, but I will try". And here it is for you.

Kalyaana thenila - With Rashmi Nair
Song : KalyaaNa thenila
Movie : Mounam Sammadham
Singers : K. J. Yesudas, Chitra
Lyrics: Pulmaippiththan
Composer : Ilaiyraja
Performed by : Murali Venkatraman, Rashmi Nair
Few days back, I received a blog-update from Jo saying that there is a new singer by name Rashmi Nair. Jo has been instrumental in bringing to light so many new talents and I always listen to his recommendations. Rashmi proved to be another very good find. She had sung KalyaaNa thEn nilaa in her blog all by herself and it was beatiful rendition. Hence, I asked her to send me the voice track and karaoke without telling her what I was planning.
I cut out the portions of Rashmi which were originally sung by KJY and I sang them. When I sent it to her, she was surprised that I did it. So here it is - a duet version of KalyaaNa thEnila.
The song is self-evident in compositional, lyrical and renditional (of KJY, Chitra)beauty and hardly needs an explanation. I did attempt a couple of improvisations. Please let us know how you feel.

Karaigindra mEgam - My composition rendered by Sindhuja Bhaktavatsalam
Song : Karaigindra mEgam
Singer : Sindhuja Bhaktavatsalam
Lyrics: Murali Venkatraman
Composition : Murali Venkatraman
Genre : Meera Bhajans
Meera-Krishna is one of my favorite themes. Being a skeptic, I have asked myself so many times :
"Was Meera a deranged lady who sought the invsible Krishna in spite of all the wealth and pleasures that a palace had to offer ? Or was she a true representative of the concept of a devotee established to realize the invisible fabric of cosmic consciousness ?"
I have not been able to satisfactorily answer myself either way till today. However, when I look at some of the beautiful poems by Meera Bai, I could see Meera representing a selfless, although unrequited love. She was definitely not deranged. So what was she ? I have wondered many times how this basic emotion - love - especially when unreturned could be explained scientifically. It is an unresolved question still. Till the day it is understood Meera has all my appreciation.
Sindhuja - one of my favorite singers - has been a singing force in the blogs. This particular song was composed by me with Vani Jayaram in mind. Sindhu has done a vey good job in capturing the soul of the song in a different but pleasing manner. Please let us know what you feel about it.

en mEl vizundha - With Sindhuja
Song: En mEl vizundha
Movie : May maadham
Composer : A. R. Rehman
Singers : Jayachandran, Chitra
Lyrics : Vairamuththu
Performed by : Murali Venkatraman, Sindhuja
Enmel vizundha mazaiththuLiyE |
The movie may maadham had too many good songs with maargazi poove being the most popular. This song was another beautiful melody from Rehman soulfully rendered by JC and Chitra.
Sindhuja - with whom I had some of the most memorable discussions in music over the years - has sung this song with me. The song has more sangathis by Chitra than by Jayachandran and I sincerely believe Sindhuja has done a great job in rendering them. Our version is up for you to to listen and let us know how good it is.

Vaadaatha Rosapoo
Song : Vaadaatha Rosapoo
Singer: SPB
Movie : Gramaththu Atthiyayam
Composer : Ilaiyaraja
Performed by : Murali Venkatraman
In one of my blog posts, I had somebody requesting me to sing this song. I was utterly unfamiliar with this song. The person who did not reveal him/herself sent me both the karaoke and the original mp3 so that I could sing. I think this happened months ago. I got this recorded a month back and this is for that person who had taken an interest to make me sing this lovely rustic number.
The song is apparently simple. But when one sings lines like "ammaadi" one would come to know how difficult it is to match the master singer's expressions. The quality of the karaoke is not that great. And my version is up for your panning.

AalolankiLi thOppilE - With Sowmya
Song : AalolankiLi
Movie : Siraichaalai
Composer : Ilaiyaraja
Lyrics : Vaali
Singers : SPB, Chitra
Performed by: Sowmya and Murali Venkatraman
The move was a masterpiece from IR in terms of background music. and it was really unfortunate that although the movie bagged every award possible a the national level, the national award for music was left out. One of the grandest scores of IR after Guru (Malayalam) with complex symphonic arrangements and gripping BGM. Especially the song "vande mataram" was a soul stirring number.
This song was a simpler melody and it was a bigger hit in kerala than in tamil nadu. Sowmya and I have tried to sing this. Please let us know how you feel abut it.

Pon enpadho
Song : Pon enpadho
Composer : Ramanujam
Singer : SPB
Performed by : Murali Venkatraman
Probably around 4 years back, when Napster was obsolete and there was hardly any way to get a hand on some forgotten great numbers, I was chatting with Rajaraman - the admin of tfmpage on Yahoo Messenger. There used to be some space in the tfmpage server (about 8 MB) which we both would use to transact songs (Just 1 song could be present in the server at any time). We used to dig a lot of golden oldies. RR was a big fan of golden oldies and used to collect these from obscure sources ( Well..Saravanan of dhool is the absolute master in this regard..nevertheless there were other souls like Mano, RR who knew a big fraction of the Walking Encyclopaedia that is Saravanan). He uploaded this song for me one day and I was caught in a trance because it was probably after 20 years that I was hearing that song. I remembered the song coming through Srilankan radio when I used to be in 6th Grade. I savoured the song every bit and also decided to sing sometime.
The greatness of SPB, as I have seen, is in giving life to compositions of even lesser known composers. This song was sung by him for Ramanujam and I took a liking for this song even as a child. It is relatively obscure but with google pretty much creeping into every crevice of the world, nothing seems impossible to get. It is a beautiful melody embellished to perfection by SPB. I have given a shot at it.
Listen to the original here
SPB yin kuralai Pon enpadho ? Poo enpadho ?
Thanks to Aravind for modifying the original file to soften the rendition.

Ponnira Vaanam - Tamil version of Mallelu poose
Song : Ponnira Vaanam
Original Song : Mallelu Poose (Telugu)
Singer : SPB
Composer : Rajan-Nagendra
Movie : Intinti Ramayanam
Tamil Lyrics : Udhaya
Performed By : Murali Venkatraman
Original Song : Mallelu Poose (Telugu)
Singer : SPB
Composer : Rajan-Nagendra
Movie : Intinti Ramayanam
Tamil Lyrics : Udhaya
Performed By : Murali Venkatraman
Mixed By : Pradip Somasundaran
Nearly 5 years ago, Raja Govindarajan - a popular telugu and tamil stage singer in North America sent me an assorted collection of songs in 2 cassettes. One contained great numbers from Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, Ghulam Ali and Ajoy chakraborty. The other one had a collection of SPB's , what I think, are the finest telugu songs. And it included:
1. oh cheli idhi toli pata
2. madhumaasa vELalo
3. aNuvu aNuvula
4. naa hrudayapu kovilalo
5. pooche poolalona
6. nenoka prema pipaasini
7. kadhile mEgama
8. ee divilo virisina paarijatamu
9. shivaranjani navaragini
10. mallelu poose
Although every number is very dear to me, it is last song that took my breath away. I had not heard a melody so captivating in telugu till then and I ended up playing the song over and over the entire day ! Every note oozes romance (in telugu of course which I have not a clue a about), but you could feel every note's warmth in the enchanting rendition of SPB. Language was immaterial to understand or let me say, feel the song. I can, without any element of exaggeration, say that this song provoked the composer and singer in me. Honestly I was outraged by the disparity in creation - the bundle of talent that were Rajan-Nagendra and the silken voiced supremo SPB and the banal musical pretender that I am. I think I said loudly in the car:
"mavanE..eppadi..eppadi paadaraan paaru..yENda ennai ellaam padichchaan ? !@#$..eppadi oru tune pOttu irukkaan paaru..ippadi oru tune pOttutu seththu pOidaNum"
And I have found myself mouthing similar words when I hear MSV's compositions. Please regard my appreciation in singular address as the love for the artists I worship. I have always heard envy never brings love. But when it concerns me, I think in the case of SPB, MSV, KJY and IR, I make an exception. My envy is simply an extension of the deep affection I have towards their musical creations.
I did have the temerity to perform this song a couple of times on stage - once in telugu and once in kannada (aaseya bhava)
==========
If mallelu poose's linguistics cannot be fully appreciated by me, I know who I need to turn to. Udhaya. Impressed heavily by the song, he wrote tamil lyrics albeit with a philosophical overtone and not the romantic overtone the original has.
When I got the lyrics I had to say this :
"mavane..eppadiyya ezudharaan ippadi?"
In order to stay true to the philosophical overtone of Udhaya's lines, I chose to underplay the romantic element that is present all over in SPB's telugu rendition. So, what you hear is what Udhaya and I cooked up in the background of Rajan-Nagendra's orchestration and SPB's shadow. Please let us know how you feel.

Malare Mounama - With Sowmya
Song : Malare Mounama
Composer : vidyasagar
Movie : Karna
Singers : S. Janaki, SPB
Performed by : Sowmya, Murali Venkatraman
I think it was in late 90s. SPB after recording a song excalaimed to the director of the movie "90s la vandha songs la indha maadhiri endha paattaiyum naanum jaanaki ammaavum anubavichu paadinadhillai. dhayavu seydhu idhai nalla padam aakkunga"
That song was reasonably picturized and became the face of the great composer Vidyasagar. A total Raag- Darbari pujari, he churned out many melodies in the same or similar scales without ever sounding stale or repetitive : nee kaatru naan maram, malaikkaatru vandhu. A composer whose melodies have the strength to stand the test of time. A composer who is regarded by SPB as one among the best he has worked for.
Sowmya of ragasudha got introduced to me probably a year or two back. She is a consistent performer as you would see in her blog. Here I team up with her to present this song in our voices after quite a long break.
SPB has stamped his class all over in this wonderful song. Every time he sings malare, the modulations are different. This extreme creativity can neither be reproduced nor be acquired by hard work. One simply needs to be born blessed.

Barse Badariya - Meera Bhajan - My composition rendered by Swati Kanitkar
Song : Barse Badariya
Singer : Swati Kanitkar
Lyrics: Meera Bhajans
Composition : Murali Venkatraman
Special Thanks : Sanjeev Ramabhadran
It has been almost 5 yrs or even more..since I have known Swati Kanitkar (Kaushiji). The very first tamil song I composed on Krishna - "thendrale en kaNNananai" was inpired by her voice in yahoo chat, although the ragas or scales of thendrale and the song which 'inspired' it were completely different. In fact I do not even remember the song which supposedly inspired it. So I guess it was just her voice.
After some initial dabbliing with tamil songs, I decided to compose a meera bhajan and this is what I did:
(1) Did a search in internet for meera bhajan lyrics
(2) Picked up the first one I saw
(3) And composed the tune.
In this process I deliberately avoided listening to or knowing about how meera bhajans had been composed earlier. I composed two songs like this - Barse Badariya and Aisee laagi lagan - only to come to know later that they had already been tuned by some great composers too. Barse was composed by Hridayanath Mangeshkar and has also other versions in raga Megh and ragamalika whereas the song aisee laagi lagan had been immortalized by Anup Jalota.
No wonder when I started composing my first hindi song, I wanted Swati to grace it.
And grace it she did, with unmatched elan that I had seen none doing earlier. The song was originally conceived with two voices - Sanjeev Ramabhadran and Swati Kanitkar - in mind, but later I wanted a vocals only version given my impoverished graduate life and lack of musical equipment. And what you hear is the version that Swati infused life into. Special thanks to Sanjeev for participating in discussions pertinent to this song.
And this was composed 5 or 6 years ago and is one of the many songs (another one is alankruta )that I have lost patience with since I am never going to get to orchestrate these. Please let me and Swati know how you all like it.

I am posting a karaoke after quite a break. My version of this beautiful composition by Rehman soulfully rendered by Srinivas. I ripped off the initial loop from the original song and used it repeatedly and to create karaoke for myself :)

Virginia Tech Tragedy
Schools are temples of education where only the truth is deified. And see what has happened in Virginia Tech..31 ppl have been shot dead and some others wounded seriously by a reckless gunman ! And some of the shooting had taken place in the classrooms of Engineering and Sciences building !!
Being in an engineering building myself in an other university, it sent down shivers thru the spine ! This is worse than Columbine incident
PLEASE SPARE THE SCHOOLS YOU RECKLESS FOOLS ! By destroying inncoent but brillaint students you are destroying your future !!!
Let the souls rest in peace. My prayers.

A spoof on Sachin
One of my good friends - Arun Vaidyanathan - who is a writer, director and a disgruntled fan of the Indian Cricket team, makes fun of Sachin Tendulkar in this hilarious spoof.

Alankruta Sundara Roopam - Murali and Murali
Song : Alankruta Sundara Roopam
Singer : Murali Ramanathan
Lyrics and Composition by : Murali Venkatraman
It has been almost 5 years since my fascination with Baby Krishna and allied Krishna themes started. Somehow, this seems to excite the writer in me most of the times. I have, earlier in one post, presented a song "vENdinEn unai vENdinen". Most of the songs I have written and set tune, however, are sleeping in the computer. I have been searching for specific voices for specific songs.
One such song is presented below - Alankruta Sundara Roopam - written in sanskrit by me. I composed this song in Raga Charukeshi to bring out the devotional bhaavam as much as possible. After composing I realized, a beautiful voice capable of rendering the Bhakthi is required to bring out the beauty in it. It lay in the racks until I met Murali Ramanathan online. I told myself - I cannot get a better voice for this song and I should not wait any further.
I think Murali Ramanathan has rendered this brilliantly capturing all the brighas, sangathis, gamakam and bhaavam that I had given him and also embellished it with some of his own. The moment I heard the song, I was awestruck. But mind it, this is just a draft version ! The song needs to be redone with veena sitar violin etc. and I can only imagine how this wonderful singer will sound then !!

India trip and the goodies
A re-union with the family after 5 yers cannot be captured merely in words as they are powerless. Two months flew away and all days were busy with some agenda or the other. HAd a great time with parents and sis. Met a few ppl from the blogosphere and had a very nice time.
I stayed at Pradip's home when I went to Guruvayur. He and his family played great hosts and his son was a non-stop entertainer. He dabbled with my blazer and wanted to know why I had bought such a big shirt ! It was fun talking to him in English since I was the first person he had tried to talk in english with. Pradip's daughter - the quiet and organized antonym of Pradip's son - carries a silent reputation of having finsihed 48 Krithis along with dance classes and she is still in 6th grade ! A silent over-achiever. Pradip and I talked through the night and slept around 3:00 am. We discussed some of my compositions and also discussed his great times with Sandeep Chowta. Pradip has probably some of the most advanced gear that one may find in home recording.

Myself, Pradip and Divya
The next day lunch was at Divya's place. Both Pradip and Divya have lovely houses dwarfed only by their hospitality. In the little time that I had, I taught some of the nuancces of "neelaambari" song to Divya. Divya's mom and earlier Pradp's wife had cooked excellent food and needless to say, a desi-food-hungry NRI who was denied desi food for 5 years, pounced on it with glee. My mom, who hails from Kerala had a great time with all relishing conversations in malayalama nd great Kerala cuisine. I had hardly 2 hours to spend at divya's place but every minute of it is still ingering in my mind. Some photos that we took are given here.
Aishwarya and Divya
It was unfortunate that I could meet Jo only in the Trichur Railway Station. Pradip, Jo, my mother and I had some conversations till the late and irritatingly slow Venad Express came to the platform. I met Murali Ramanathan and Anil Kumar BS also, in Trivandrum. However, the photos are not available with me yet. Murali and Anil spent quite some time during the day discussing some of our compositions and also saw me off in the airport. Overall, it was a great experience.
I missed out to mention earlier that I met Ajit Gopalakrishnan - the orchestrator of "aisi bheegi" and "ennaachu". WE both have chemical engineering backgrounds and we ended up talking chem engg than music !! Sorry Ajit, to leave your name out in a jiffy ! I know you are into music as much as you are into Chem Engg !!!
