After my crazy long run with PhD and my childish dabbling with music for almost 5 years, I am taking a break for solid 2 months which I plan to spend with parents and sis. Well that thing about visa stamping is there...

Azhagaay poosum - அழகாய் பூசும் மஞ்சள் -Teaser by murali-venkatraman

One of the biggest complaints that my music friends have is that I dont sit down and finish the songs that I start. Well, truly speaking there are some reasons:

1. Lack of proper equipment. Somehow I have been having a bad time with all soundcards with limited money I have to buy them.
2. Serious lack of time.
3. I generally try to think of too many things at the same time and no wonder sometimes I lose focus. Many songs have been composed for which tunes and lyrics are ready but orchestration is only half way through.
4. With my minimal knowledge in orch'n, I still have this burning desire to create musical interludes which have a life of their own. Overambitious - I guess - given the puny knowledge to back it up ! With so many softwares and loops available, it is relatively easy to "fill a tune" with inance musical interludes, but I am trying to see if I can transcend beyond this limitation. Since I do NOT have the required expertise, I have to toil long and hard to be really convinced that the orchestration sounds tight and fresh.
   

This song, the tune of which was composed a while back has its lyrics written by Udhaya. I asked him to start with the line "azagaay poosum manjaL" and he penned some very beautiful lines for the song. 

The sax (not the violin) plays the tune in this bit. Only the prelude - pallavi - interlude 1 can be heard in this teaser. The volume levels are yet to be balanced properly. You may want to sing these lines along with the sax:

Blogswara-Aavarthana Concert in Raleigh, USA

I was asked to do a programme in Raleigh by Dr.Shankarkumar on Nov 2th, 2006 for his friends. I figured this would be a good opportunity to make this a blogswara meet. The following Blogswara members were roped in for the concert and we had a very nice show:

(1) Anup Nandialath
(2) Sam Kolli
(3) Barani
(4) Murali Venkatraman (myself)

Barani had had no stage experience and Sam had minimal. But they performed admirably. With audience and the talents in mind, I charted out a list in which each artist could be showcased individually. Barani was given around 7-8 songs including the punch numbers - Devuda and vaaLai meenukkum. Please watch this space for the video clips.

Teaser 4

Bengali baul geet is a folk tradition which derives a lot from sufi philosophy although they are sung mostly by hindu nomadic saints. I intended to compose a song in that mould and ended somewhere in between a baul geet and maajhi (boatman ) geet.

When I composed this tune, I had only one voice in mind - Pradip. I needed a strong deep voice which would be able to deliver the impact of the philosophy that is expounded by the lyricist through the boatman. And I am sure Pradip's voice would have the required depth for delivering this song.

The sax that you hear is the tune of mukhda (pallavi). The voice of Pradip will be added later.

This song was probably the first to be composed exclusively for Blogswara 1. However, due to some logistic reasons it could not make it. Sendhamarai made it to BLS 1. I am still dabbling with this song to make better. What u hear is the prelude.

After the PhD, I have been terribly busy with the post doc work. But somehow, the creative juices have flowed a little bit and I am working on a song right now. Udhaya has alreayd written the lyrics and Vidya and I may be singing it. This is just a skeleton of the prelude music. The Flute you hear is just a sketch of the lady's aalaap to be. The synthetic flute may sound weird though..

Neeraaduvaan - a mallu song from NakakshathangaL

It has been quite sometime since I sang a mallu song. So, when I got the karaoke of Neeraaduvaan from NakakshathangaL, I coudl not resist myself. This simple, but extremely soulful melody of Ravi rendered so romantically by DasEttan ranks as one of the finest examples in melody making. Ravi's trademark is in making a simple but unforgettable soulful melody. He loved the raga mohanam so much that he had the temerity to score three songs in the same ragam in the movie NakakshathangaL one of which won the second National award also for Chitra. He is a true priest of melody.

This song has a long aalaap by KJY which is a little tough to sing. I have tried my level best to do justice to the song. Please let me know how you like it.

Ding Dong Kovil Mani- A duet with Srividya

Vidyasagar and Ramesh Vinayagam are the only composers in TFM (barring Rehman) who have a strong sense of melody. Vidyasagar is credited with some breathtaking melodies like malare mounama, nee kaatru, poo vaasam, pinneyum pinneyum etc. I have not been hearing a lot of new songs lately since most of them sound very much devoid of melody. Hence, when Vidya came up with the idea of singing this song, I was very skeptical looking at the first line of lyrics which comes with the English words "ding dong". I am generally not a great fan of lyrics that do not have life in them. But surprisingly, this song's tune and the rest of the lyrics were neat. Then I was wondering what scale this song was in and I found an article on it. Ramesh on music notes:

Have you heard "Ding Dong Kovil Mani" song from "Ji"? It is a beautiful composition by Vidyasagar. In this song, almost all the instruments seem to have a longer sustain, giving a sort of eerie effect. In the charanam an extra percussion layer of Dhols is added over the western drums giving a nice sound. This beat is similar to "Kurukku Siruthavalae" from Muthalvan.

Interestingly, this is set in a not-so-common rasikapriya raaga, which is the 72nd melakartha ragam, which is why I thought of blogging this. Arohanam is S R3 G3 M2 P D3 N3 S and avaraohanam is S N3 D3 P M2 G3 R3 S.

That caught my interest. And since the tune was already lilting with Madhu-Vidyasagar combo usually coming up with great numbers, I was more than eager to sing it with Vidya. Also, I had do some decoding of what both madhus had sung for aalaaps since this is a rare raga. This is our second duet and thanks to Vidya for asking me to sing a lovely song which would have gone unnoticed from my radar due to the self-imposed apathy towards the new film songs.

Eeramaana rojaave

It has been quite sometime since I sang a song of my maanaseega gurunathar Shri K.J.Yesudas. So here it is. A beautiful song by Ilaiyaraja based on Madhyamavathi ragam with some profound lyrics like:

"thaNNeeril moozgaadhu kaatruLLa pandhu
ennODu nee paadi vaa sindhu"

which when translated means:

"an air filled ball does not sink. So you come and sing a tamil folk song with me". I dont know what the hell the lyricist had in mind when he wrote those lyrics. Please let me know what you have in mind when you hear me sing :)

viziyil vizundhu - Meera, Pradip and Myself

It was in April that Poorni released a beautifully sung version of "viziyil vizundhu" in her blog. Not one to be easily lured into making a karaoke, I was simply compelled involuntarily into making a Karaoke track the same day in an effort to support her beautiful rendition. I had earlier used ghatam tone in the song Sendhaamarai. I wanted to see how to use Mrudangam tone in songs. This was a good song to experiment. I imagined bluebyrd's voice to provide the basal male voice and poorni doing the lady portion. Somehow the logistics did not work out and the karaoke just remained idle.

Later when talking to Meera, I came to know she was interested in singing this song. We asked Jo and he agreed. But it had to wait once again due to blogswara and sundry work. Finally Meera found time to work on the song and asked me to do the male vocals. Then came the biggest hurdle - She had reduced the scale further ! Both Jo and I struggle with the delivery of base notes yet and I said to Meera:

"At this pitch there is only one person who can sing flawlessly. And that is Pradip. If I sing it will more like a buffalo yawning"

And I am happy I realized it. Pradip's singing though minimal is like an icing on the cake that is Meera's voice. Listen to this beautiful version of Viziyil Vizundhu by Pradip and Meera

A month of bad seller luck at Ebay !

What happened to me at Ebay in the last 30 days, is some unbelievable stuff ! It was completely antonymous to the time when money would just fly out of my hand for no reason ! The entire month I tried to buy something and I got refunded for merchandise over and over. Read on..

I tried to buy:

(1) A professional sound card M-Audio Delta 1010 LT PCI - value $200
(2) A 500 GB internal SATA II hard drive for my computer - value $250
(3) A 500 GB external hard drive for Jose's computer - value -$250
(4) A 500 GB internal ATA II hard drive for my Jose's computer -value $250
(5) An SM58 microphone - value $80

Let me explain the debacles one by one:

1. Professional sound card M-Audio Delta 1010 LT PCI
   
   The seller had listed a soundcard in mint condition. At Ebay, usually I put my max bid and forget the auction. I did the same. I won the auction by placing a max bid of $116.00. Since it required immediate Paypal payment, I paid immediately only to get a mail 1 hr later that the listing has been removed by ebay since it violated the conditions of ebay. Panic stricken, I contacted the seller only to know that she had goofed up in the auction. She explained that she was new to ebay and she wanted to put a reserve price of $125 on that card but she did not however know how to do it ! So she altered the description of the item and included "I will not accept anything less than $125 for this item" 1 hour before the auction the auction would end. I did not notice this line before I paid and Ebay removed the listing since it violated the conditions. However this was an honest newbie seller and I offered her a chance to rectify herself and she reimbursed me fully. ( I had to walk her through Paypal refunding too ! )
   
   
2. 500 GB internal SATA II hard drive for my computer
   
   After investigating into my Dell dimension 310, I found that I needed a extra hard drive bracket and an internal SATA 2 hard drive to expand my data storage. I ordered the SATA drive and what I got was an Ultra ATA dirve !!! Disappointed, I contacted the seller, once again a lady, who had not given appropriate description of the item. She apologized and offered me to keep the ATA drive for $25.oo less than the auction price. I would have done that had I not ordered another ATA drive for Jose - the guitarist friend of mine who lives in Atlanta. She asked me if any of my friends would be interested in it. I sent a mail to Indian Students Organization and found no takers. Sent the hard drive back and got the refund.
   
   
3. A 500 GB external hard drive for Jose's computer
   
   Jose - my friend in Atlanta's profession is music. He was one of the most-wanted guitarists in film industry back in India. Here he composes albums, conducts classes and perfroms live with stalwarts like Yesudas and Chitra. Since his work needed humongous amount of storage and also a similar sized back up, I ordered two drives - an internal ultra ATA 500 GB and an external Firewire 500 GB. The firewire hard drive came and was devoid of firewire ! I got so irrirated I wrote to the seller asking him to explain. He apologized for the wrong description of the item and offered me to sell it for $25 less than the auction price. By that time I was convinced that USB HDD would suffice Jose's requirements but I had just got too peeved with so many sellers sending me wrong stuff. Also my friend Karthik suggested that this was a standard trick on Ebay - wrong description - unwanted product - an offer for less and see if the buyer accepts it - this way they can sell some non-moving products. Though I did not quite think of a conspiracy theory like this, I was irritated. So I wrote to him :
   
   Hi,
   
   Discussed with my friend. We find that your $25 refund may be insufficient to persuade us to keep the hard drive. You have two options:
   
   (1) You could reimburse $50 and I keep the HDD
   (2) You could reimburse $226.76+ $28(shipping) + a $22 fee for shipping the HDD back to you which comes to $276 approx.
   
   The $22 fee is because of the time we have lost in waiting for the HDD and working on its disposal and I am tired of sellers sending me wrong products. I think a fair deal would be for you to send me an amount of $50 as reimbursement which really would be the reduced price sans the shipping.
   
   I am afraid I do not see any other choice as acceptable. I assure you that I will leave a positive comment whatever be the option you choose.

   That is, I gave him a choice of losing $50 and getting the HDD back or losing $50 and letting me keep it. He chose the latter and I got a good drive for a good deal. I felt I kind of arm-twisted him. Did not want to do it..but hmm..
   
   
4. A 500 GB internal ATA II hard drive for Jose's computer
   
   This got to be the most dramatic. I ordered it three weeks back thinking it would reach me before Jose visited me. guess what happened ? The seller's sister died and he had no choice but to leave for the funeral as he was. He wrote a mail saying that he can either re-imburse or ship it delayed. Not wanting to add to his grief, I accepted the delayed shipping. It has been shipped this Monday. Longest delay possible !!!
   
   
5. An SM58 microphone
   
   I bought this microphone for an awseome deal of $80 (free shipping) thinking that my AKG mic is dead. When the SM58 arrived, it appeared dead too. Sensing that there could be a problem in the cable only then, I went to Radioshack and bought a new mic cable and my heavens - both the mics worked !!! I was wondering why the hell I invested on SM58 and tried convincing myself that it will be useful for my live performances. And then came Swati Kanitkar. She was looking for a mic and she called me and said - "Send it to me - I will pay you". Thus was gone this merchandise !
   

A total jinxed month for buying stuff.

PS: I did finally "succeed" in buying a SATA 2 500 GB drive for myself. Some storage at last !!!

Welcome Kaumudee Torsekar

Kaumudee Torsekar - another singer friend based in California - who I came to know through yahoo music rooms almost at the same time as Kaushiji. A very talented singer who has learnt hindustani music professionally and has sung professionally for many years. A friend with whom I have had so many conversations ranging from raga puriya dhanashree ( which she thinks is flexible like an elastic band stretchable to any extent) to recipe for thai curry.

Kaumu as we call her, has been a sort of inspiration in that you can never say whether she is upset or cheerful just by talking to her. Her talking or chatting is always at the highest energy level possible that, while talking to her one cannot help the feeling of being pressurized to respond fast. Always bubbly and cheerful, she excels in any genre of song that she sings - be it meera bhajan or song of helen - an indication of her devotion to the art that she practices.

Poththi vechcha malliga mottu - with Vidya

This song famously picturized on Revathi as she comes winding down a climber/creeper in the backdrop of a snakey violin piece from the Maestro is one of the classics. SPB and Janaki gave heartwarming renditions. Along with Vidya, I have tried to recapture a miniscular percentage their great performance.

Vidya is already a familiar name with regular audiobloggers. Backed by a solid classical training, she has sung wonderful songs like kaNNamoochi Enada and ooru sanam thoongidichu. She has a sweet voice along with a good range and her renditions are usually bhaavam rich. A tamilian based outside tamilnadu almost all her life, she is making rapid instrides into getting comfortable singing in tamil.

பொருள்:

எலும்பை உருக்கும் நோய்களெல்லாம் எங்களை அண்டக்கூடும். எனவே ஐயா, நாம் பாதுகாப்புடன் உறவு வைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்று பலமுறை விண்ணப்பித்துச் சொன்னாலும் எம்மை அண்டி வருவோரில் பலர் காது கொடுத்து கேட்க மாட்டார். பாதுகாப்பற்ற முறையால் பல நோய்களை எமக்குச் சுமையாக தந்து விட்டு போகிறார். ஆனால் எங்களைத் தான் வில்லியாகப் பின்னர் சொல்வார்கள். என்னவோ நாங்கள் மட்டும் தான் இதற்குக் காரணம் போன்று. நோயால் உடல் வெம்பும். ஊர் வாயால் உள்ளம் வெம்பும். எங்கள் கதையைக் கேட்டால் கல் கூட உருகிடும். ஆனால் சமுதாயத்தின் மனது மட்டும் இளக மாட்டேன் என்கிறதே ?

பொருள்:

கல்வியைக் கற்றுத் தருகின்ற பெரியவர்களுக்கு முறையான மரியாதைகள் செய்து குரு என்று போற்றுகின்றனர். தானங்கள் செய்து வறியவர்களின் பசியைப் போக்குகின்ற குணம் கொண்டவர்களை புரவலர்கள் என்று போற்றுகின்றனர். கானங்கள் செய்து பொருள் ஈட்டுகின்றவர்களைக் கவி என்பார். இப்படி பலரும் பலது செய்து வாழ்கின்றனர். சிலர் தொழிலாகவும், சிலர் சேவையாகவும் இதனை செய்கின்றனர். இவர்களுக்கெல்லாம் நல்ல மரியாதை கிடைக்கிறது. ஆனால், காதல் எனும் அமிழ்தத்தை தருகின்ற எங்களை மட்டும் ஈனப் பிறவிகள் என்று எள்ளி நகையாடி ஒதுக்கி வைக்கின்றார்களே ? ஏன் ? காதலும் காமமும் இல்லாமல் உலகின் இன்பமும் இயக்கமும் இருக்குமா ?

Writer Sujata on Blogswara !!! (Vikatan Excerpt)

Celebrated tamil writer and intellectual - Sujata, has a word of praise for blogswara in the popular tamil weekly vikatan. Thanks to my friend Balaji Srinivasan who sent me the reference !!

Sujata explains how the songs are usually made in the film industry. The music director sends the tune to the lyricist thru an assistant. The lyricist writes the lyrics and sends back thru the assitant. The assistant makes several trips between them and finally when the music director is happy with the lyrics, he starts working on the complete song. The singers or the choir people are summoned even in the mid-night if need be and the songs is recorded. The music director keeps poking at the track for embellishments until the final (DAT) stage.

Sujata also explains how Blogswara has achieved it through internet obviating the need for any assistants (well..we cannot afford it in the first place ! :) ). He also notes that, although the quality of the songs may not be uniform he is impressed with the innovativeness of the concept.

பொருள்:

உடலிலே தோன்றுகிற ஆசைகள் என மூன்றைச் சொல்லுவார்கள் பெரியவர்கள். தாகம் - அதுவரும் போது தண்ணீர் வேண்டும். பசி - அது வந்தால் வயிறு தளர்கிறது. சோறு வேண்டும். மோகம் - இது இயற்கையால் உந்தப் படும் தாபம். காகத்தை போன்ற அழகு படைத்தவராயிருந்தாலும், தன் காயத்தில் (உடலில்) காதல் நோய் பற்றி விட்டால், பெண் மட்டுமே அதனை தீர்க்க முடியும் என்று பெரியவர்கள் கூறி வைத்துள்ளானர்.

நாடாளும் மன்னர்கள் நங்கை தம்மை
   நயம்பேசி பயம்தந்து பொருளும் தந்து
கூடாரம் பலவைத்துக் கூடிக் கொள்வார்
   கூற்றுவனின் குரல்கேட்கும் வரையில் மண்ணில்.

பொருள்:

இப்படிப்பட்ட மோகத்தீயானது நாடாளும் மன்னர்களை எப்படி ஆட்டுவிக்கிறது ? அவர்கள், நயமாகவும் தன் பதவி பற்றி பயமாகவும் பேசி, பின்னர் பொருளும் தந்து பல கூடாரங்களிலும் பல பெண்களைப் பராமரித்து சல்லாபம் புரிவர். கூற்றுவனின்(எமன்)அழைப்பு வரும் வரை இங்கனமே செய்கின்றார். ஆனால் அவர்களைப் போல பொருள் ஈட்டி பல பெண்களோடு கூட முடியாமல் போகும் பாமர மக்களோ காமத்தீ வந்து விட்டால் என்ன செய்வார் ? "ஒரு பெண்ணோடு கூடாமல் போனால் வாழ்க்கை முழுமை பெறாது. எனவே நாமும் சிறிது சிற்றின்பம் பெற வேண்டும்"என்று முடிவு செய்து கூச்சத்தை நீக்கி எங்கள் வாசலுக்கு வருகிறார்

இரண்டு வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னே உதயாவிடமும் மற்ற நண்பர்களிடமும் இணையத்தில் அளவளாவிக் கொண்டிருந்த போது பாலியல் தொழிலாளிகள் பற்றிய ஒரு பேச்சு எழுந்தது. அவர்களுக்கு தேவதாசி என பெருமை செய்த காலத்தில், பாராளும் மன்னர் முதல் பாமரர் வரை காமக் கலையின் நுணுக்கங்களுக்காக அவர்களிடம் சென்று பயின்று வந்ததாக பல நூல்கள் கூறுவதுண்டு. அவர்களுக்குச் சமுதாயத்தில், அத்தொழிலுக்கென்ற ஒரு மதிப்பு வழங்கப் பட்டு இருந்தது.

அவர்கள் விரும்பி அத்தொழிலை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு இருந்திருக்க மாட்டார்கள் என்றாலும் அவர்களை நாயினும் கீழ் சாதியென நடத்துகின்ற விதம் போகப் போகத்தான் உருவானது. ஒரு ஆணாதிக்கச் சமுதாயத்தில் மெல்லியலாரின் கூக்குரல்கள் குறுகித் தேய்ந்து அழிந்து போய் விட்டன. அவர்களின் இன்றைய நிலமையோ கேட்கவே வேண்டாம். உடலை சிதைக்கின்ற உயிர்க்கொல்லி வியாதிகள் ஒரு புறம். மனதை வதைக்கின்ற மனிதர்கள் மறுபுறம். ஓரு பெண் இத்தொழிலுக்கு வருவாளேயானால் அவள் சந்தர்ப்ப வசத்தால் எவ்வளவு இழந்து இருப்பாள் என்று சிந்தித்துப் பாருங்கள் ?! எத்தனை வலிகளைத் தாங்கிக் கொண்டு வந்து இருப்பாள் ?! அவள் அளிக்கும் உடலின்பத்திற்கு பதிலாக அவளுக்கு கிடைப்பதெல்லாம் உடல், மன வேதனை மற்றும் சிறிதளவு பணம். அவ்வளவு தான்.

எங்கள் உரையாடலின் போது என்னுள் ஒரு எண்ணம் எழுந்தது. ஒரு வேசி தன் நிலைமையைப் பாடி தனக்கும் சமுதாயத்தில் மதிப்பு கேட்பது போல் எழுதினால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என்று தோன்றியது. அப்படி ஒரு கற்பனையில் தோன்றியவை தான் வரப்போகும் இந்த 6 பாடல்கள். அதில் முதல் பாடலை உங்களுக்கு தருகிறேன்.

எங்களுக்கு உடலிலோ குணாத்திலோ வேறு எதிலும் சரி சிறியவர் பெரியவர் என்ற பாகுபாடு இல்லை. என்றும் நாங்கள் எவரைப் பார்த்தும் முகம் கோணி நிற்க மாட்டோம். பொன்னை தாரையாக (மழையாக) பொழிகின்ற மனிதருக்கெல்லாம் (பகல்)பொழுதா இரவா என்று எல்லாம் பார்க்காமல் இன்பம் தருகிறோம். Thanks to the amazing power of internet, broadband connections and software power, talent search has become an enormously simplified process. New artists with simple tools can publish their work which soon gets noticed by the tech savvy public easily.

Consider two artists - Sindhuja and Deepika who I met at TFMPAGE and ORKUT respectively. Both the ladies are intelligent, suave, have academic degrees of importance and most importantly immensely talented singers. It gives me great pleasure to feature them here.

Sindhuja

I met Sindhuja at tfmpage where there was a section by name "Raga of the song" (ROS). Along with Sheela (veeNa artist), Ram and Vijay (my fellow composer) we had a superb time discussing ragas of songs, guided mainly by Sheela. All the afore-mentioned have become close friends over the years and have been interacting as if they are a part of my extended family.

Hi all,
I'm doing my masters in physics at IIT,Guwahati. Been learning vocal carnatic classical for a long time now. Presently learning from Mrs Lakshmi Raghavan, a student of Charumati Ramachandran. Coming from a family drowned in music, I didnt really have to do much. Thanks to my dad, I've been exposed to carnatic classical music (since he'd listen to it 24 X 7) right from the time I was a toddler I guess! Nevertheless, Indian film music has always been extra special to me, probably intellectually more stimulating. Deepthi has been a great friend of mine for the past 6 years now.She's an MA philosophy student at Central University, Hyderabad.She's musically very sharp, and has just begun to learn carnatic vocal. This experience of singing with her is something I'll always cherish!

Deepika

In orkut, I got a scrap from a young attractive lady appreciating what I have done in my musicblog. Further interaction apprised me of Deepika being the cousin of illustrious Archana Udupa - the playback singer of repute from Kannada Film industry who also was a winner of Saregama. Although Deepika had claimed in her profile that she is also a singer, and that she idolizes Archana, there was hardly any vocal sample of deepika and I urged her to use the free service of Soundclick. She managed to set up an account and it is not until this song 'silsila' that I considered her as a serious candidate for becoming a great singer. In my opinion, Deepika has a much better tonal quality than Archana since Deepika has a nice base in her voice. Listen to her mindblowing rendition here:

Chinnamani kuyile

The movie amman kOvil kizakkalE was studded with stunning and beautiful songs. This was the most popular number from that movie. The effervescent voice of SPB appropriately catpured in a superb tune by Maestro Ilaiyaraja . This song is one of the defining examples of usage of folk music in films. I had earlier tried the more complex and classical unpaarvaiyil Oraayiram. Aravind had tried kaalai nERa poonguyil in his blog. Here is chinnamanik kuyile from me.

rhim jhim gire sawan - in tamil with Udhaya's lyrics

This post has two objectives :

1. Introduce the concept of alternative lyris by Udhaya for a song
2. Introduce Shubho Sengupta - an online friend and a good singer

The song "rhim jhim gire sawan" is one of the ever-green numbers in hindi. Sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, it towers as one of those unforgettable melodies of that era. Based mainly on kheervani, a favortie of Ilaiyaraja, the song has a beautiful catchy strcuture and innovative one.

Udhaya does not have even an iota of knowledge in hindi or urdu and I can testify for it. Hence this song is NOT a translation, but his own lyrics that he had done purely because the tune transcended the language barrier. It is one of the earliest that he wrote in an attempt to come up with new lyrics for some of the songs he liked irrespective of the language. I have given a different tune for this lyrics , but that will be in another future post..And what brilliant words !

My delivery is pretty much my own imagination. Please do not look for Kishore kumar in my rendition :)

This is what I wrote about Swati on Orkut for her testimonial:

A voice that made me a composer way back in 2002. A singer par excellence. The sheer beauty of her mesmerizing delivery can render the listener spell-bound. Swati is one of those artists who one cannot come across everyday in life. Her command on akaar aalaap is so high that, it sometimes makes me hold my hands in a 'namaste' position in awe ! An artist who is always willing to work with new ideas. For all and sundry she is Swati. For me, she will always be Kaushiji.

Listening to Kaushiji in devotionals is a sublime experience akin to experiencing a divine interception in life. I can unabashedly say that I am a total pujari of her voice and that she is one of my two singing goddesses. (The other one is Deepa Sethuraman about whom I may write a blog in the future). I have also been fortunate to have her sing a composition of mine which I plan to release with complete orchestration. I think having Swati in our midst is a blessing. Had she not chosen to live in USA, I am sure she would have been picked by the best of music directors in Bombay and been catapulted to fame. Well, at least for once music directors were not lucky and we, the audiobloggers, are.

Please welcome Swati to our ever-expanding audio blog world. Kaushiji - I believe you can infuse some fresh spirit in our already bubbly audioblogging world. It is a privilege to have you among us.

Passed my PhD defense

My patient vigil seems to have finally paid off. My committee has passed me in the defense or unofficially I am Dr. Venkatraman :-). I am still required to get the thesis cleaned up and submit the already written papers to the journals which may take almost a month. I am hoping I can do it.

மதிப்பிற்குரிய பாடும் நிலா பாலு அவர்களுக்கு,

ஒரு பாமரனின் புலம்பல் கடிதம் இது. பல்லாண்டு காலமாக நீங்கள் என் வாழ்க்கையில் செய்து வரும் அக்கிரமங்களை வரிசைப்படுத்தி கேள்வி கேட்கப் போகிறேன்.

கேள்வி 1: ஏனய்யா என் வாழ்க்கையில் இப்படி ஒரு பெரும் அங்கமாக ஆகிப் போனீர்கள் ?

எந்த நேரமும் உங்கள் பாடல்களை கேட்கும்படியாக என்னை ஏன் பித்துப் பிடித்து அலையச் செய்கிறீர்கள் ?நான் கருவிலே இருந்து காதுகள் முளைத்தபோது கேட்ட முதல் இசைக் குரல்கள் உங்கள் குரலும் திரு யேசுதாஸ் அவர்களது குரலும் ஆகும். அதாவது உலகில் பிறந்து தாய் தந்தையரின் தாலாட்டு கேட்கும் முன்னரே உங்கள் தாலாட்டையும் மற்ற எல்லா உணர்சிகளும் உள்ள பாடல்களையும் கேட்டு முடித்து விட்டு இருந்தேன்..

கேள்வி 2 : ஒரு தாய் தானே தன் குழந்தைக்கு முதல் பாட்டை பாடவேணுடும் ? அவள் குரல் தானே அந்தக் குழந்தையை மகிழ்விக்க வேண்டும் ? நீங்கள் ஒரு தாயின் உரிமையை பறித்தது சரியா ?

என்ன..உலகில் வந்த உடன் "அம்மா..நான் உள்ள இருக்கும்போது SPB , ஜானகின்னு 2 பேர் பாடிக்கிட்டு இருந்தாங்களே, அவங்க எங்கம்மா ?" என்று கேட்க பேச்சு வரவில்லை. அந்த தளிர் வயதிலும் சிந்தனை மட்டும் இருந்தது.

மாலை நேரம். நெல்லைச் சீமையில் தக தக என் தங்க சூரியன் எரிந்து எல்லாரையும் இன்னும் காயப் படுத்திக் கொண்டு இருக்கிறான். வீட்டில் எல்லாரும் சிவனே என்று காப்பி குடித்துக்கொண்டு வெய்யிலின் உக்கிரத்தால் மந்தமாகி உள்ளனர். "இலங்கை ஒலி பரப்புக் கோட்டுத் தாபனம். தமிழ்ச் சேவை இரண்டு..இது ஒரு பொன் மாலை பொழுது..பாடலை பாட வருகிறார் S.P. பாலசுப்ரமணியம்". வயது நான்கு. வீட்டுப்பாடம் எழுதிக் கொண்டு இருக்கிறேன் ஒரு குழந்தை மட்டுமே அமரக்கூடிய குட்டி நாற்காலியில். பாடல் வருகிறது. சிந்தனை மாறுகிறது. வீட்டுப்பாடத்தில் கவனம் இல்லை.

"அம்மா..பொன்மாலை பொழுதுன்னா என்னம்மா ?"

"..தங்கம் மாதிரி ஜொலிக்கிற சாயங்கால வேளைடா ராஜா"..

எனக்கு புரியவீல்லை. இதென்ன ? அநியாயத்திற்கு சுடுகிறது..இந்த SPB மாமா சந்தோஷமா பாடறார் ?" வெளியில் சென்று பார்க்கிறேன். தன் தங்கக் கரங்களைக் கொண்டு சூரியன் மஞ்சள் வண்ணம் பூசிய அந்த வானமும், மேகங்கள் இடையே சில சமயம் ஊடுருவிப் பாயும் ஒளி இளஞ்சிவப்பு வண்ணத்தில் அழகை வாரித்தெளித்து விட்டு இருப்பதைம் உணர்கிறேன். அப்போது தான் சாயங்கால வேளை என்பதற்கு சூரியன் சாயம் பூசும் வேளை என உணர்ந்து கொண்டேன். அம்மா சொன்னது புரிந்தது. வானம் எனக்கு ஒரு போதி மரம். நீங்கள் எனக்கு புத்தர் ஆகிப் போனீர்கள். "அட..SPB மாமா பாடின மாதிரி அழகாத்தானே இருக்கு ?" என்று வாசலில் கால் வைத்தேன். விழுந்தது பிரம்பால் ஒரு அடி. "டேய்..படிக்காம எங்கேடா போறே ?"

கேள்வி 3: இப்படி ஒரு சிறுவனை அவன் அறியாமல் உங்கள் குரலால் வசப்படுத்தி, அடி வாங்க வைத்தது சரியா ?

சிறுவனாக இருந்த போது உங்கள் பாடல்களை உங்கள் பாடல்கள் என்று அறியாமல், ரஜினி அவர்களின் பாடல்கள் என்று நினைத்து இருக்கிறென். திரு ரஜினிகாந்த் அவர்களின் வசீகரத்தால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்ட நான் "ஆ. ஓஹோ ம்ம் ஹ்ம்ம்..காதலின் தீபம் ஒன்று என்ற பாடலை ரஜினிகாந்த் எவ்வளவு அழகாகப் பாடுகிறார்..அதோடு எவ்வளவு சூப்பராக சண்டையும் போடுகிறார்" என்று வியந்து முடியைப் பின்புறம் தள்ளிவிட்டு அவரது ரசிகன் ஆனேன். சகலகலாவல்லவன் படத்தில் "தக தக தக ததந்தா..இளமை இதோ இதோ..ஆஹா கமல் சூப்பரா பாடி ஆடுறார்" என்று நினைத்து அவருடைய ரசிகனும் ஆனேன்.

அம்மா அப்பாவிடம் "ரஜினி மாதிரி சூப்பரா பாடமுடியாது" என்று அழுத்திச் சொல்ல.."டேய் அதை பாடுறது SPB " என்று சொல்ல..ஒரே வாக்குவாதம். நான் நம்பவே இல்லை. ரஜினி தலையை ஆட்டி ஆட்டிப் பாடும்போதெல்லாம் அதெப்படி இவ்வளவு அழகாக வேறொருவர் பாட முடியும் ? முடியாது என்று அழுத்தந்திருத்தமாக நம்பினேன். "டேய் பாடத்தை படிடா..ரஜினி, பாட்டு பாடறாராம்..துரை கேட்குறாராம்" என்று வசவுச் சொல் வாங்கினேன்.

கேள்வி 4 : இப்படி அத்தனை கதாநாயகர்கள், குறிப்பாக திரு ரஜினி அவர்களுக்கு பொருந்தும் படியாகப் பாடி என்னைப் போன்ற சிறுவர்களை மயக்கிய தவறுக்கு என்ன பதில் கூறப்போகிறீர்கள் ?

மீசையும் ஆசையும் அரும்பிய வயதில் "கேளடி என் பாவையே..ஆடவன் உன் தேவையே" என்று என்னை ரோமியோவாக நினத்து என் கூடப் படிக்கும் பெண்ணிடம் பாடி, அவள் அழுது, என் வாத்தியார் வந்து என் காதை திருகியது ஞாபகம் வருகிறது. கண்ணில் நீர் வழிந்தது. வகுப்பு முடிந்து நண்பர்கள் வந்து " டேய்..அவ உனக்கு சரிப்பட்டு வர மாட்டாடா.. லவ் ல இதெல்லாம் சகஜம் டா மச்சி" என்று உதவாக்கரையான புத்திமதிகள் கொடுத்தனர். மனது கேட்காமல் நைஸாக மாலை நேரம் அவளுக்குத் தெரியாமல் வீடேறிக் குதித்து என்ன செய்கிறாள் என்று பார்க்கப் போனால், வானொலியில் "கேளடி என் பாவையே - இலங்கை ஒலி பரப்புக் கூட்டு.."!

உறைந்து போனேன்! "அட..காலைல நாம பாடினா வாத்தியார் கிட்ட அடி வாங்க வெச்சா..இப்போ என்னடான்ன இந்தாளு பாட்டை கேட்டுகிட்டு இருக்கா ?!". அடுத்த நாள் போய் மெல்ல பேச்சுக் கொடுத்துக் கேட்டேன். "SPB பாடினா of course கேட்பேன். இன்னொரு தடவை வந்து இந்த மாதிரி பேசினே பிரின்சிபால் கிட்ட சொல்லிடுவேன்" என்று மிரட்ட பயந்து போய் அந்தக் காதலை மனதில் அழித்து விட்டேன்.

கேள்வி 5: நான் பார்த்து ரசித்துக் கொண்டு இருந்த பெண்ணை, உங்கள் குரலால் வசியப் படுத்தி, என் பருவக் காதலை அழித்தது சரியா ? எதற்கு இவ்வளவு அழகாகப் பாடுகிறீர்கள் ? பிறருக்கு சில காதலிகளை விட்டு வைக்கக் கூடாதா ?

கல்லூரிப் பருவம். மேடையேறி நம் பாட்டுத் திறமையை வெளிப்படுத்தினால் கொஞ்சம் மாணவர் வட்டாரத்தில் புகழ் சம்பாதித்துக் கொள்ளலாம் என்று முயன்று தோற்றேன். பாட வாய் திறந்த போதெல்லாம் - "டேய்..SPB எவ்ளோ உயிர் கொடுத்து பாடிருக்கார். நீ பாடினா அந்த மாதிரி இல்லைடா" என்று நண்பர்கள் உண்மையாக ஆனால் கொடூரமாகக் கூற எனக்கு வளரந்தது எரிச்சல். 'ஏன் இந்த ஆளு என் லைஃப் ல இவ்ளோ தொல்லை கொடுக்குறாரு ? இத்தனைக்கும் இவரை நேர்ல கூட பார்த்ததில்லை. இவரு பாடி வெச்சிட்டு போயிட்டதால இப்போ நம்மளை மாதிரி ஆளுங்க பாடு திண்டாட்டமா இருக்குது' என்று மனதுக்குள் ஆதங்கம்.

கேள்வி 6 : இவ்வளவு அழகாகப் பாடச் சொல்லி உங்களிடம் யார் கேட்டார்கள் ? உனக்கென்ன மேலே நின்றாய் ஓ SP பாலா..?!!!

பாடுவதற்கு முன், பாமரப் பாடகர்களைப் பற்றிச் சிறிதேனும் சிந்தித்தீர்களா ? அவர்கள் தங்கள் வாழ்க்கையில் யாரிடமாவது, குறைந்தது அப்பா அம்மாவிடமாவது பாடிப் பாராட்டு பெற்று சிறிது சந்தோஷப் பட வேண்டாமா ? அந்த நல்லெண்ணம் கூட உங்களுக்கு இல்லையா ? ஒவ்வொரு முறை பாடும்போதும் நீங்கள் எப்படி பாடி இருக்கிறிர்கள் என்று சுட்டி காட்டி பாமரர்களான எங்களது நிலையைக் கொடூரமாக புரிந்து கொள்ளவைக்கிறார்களே ? இது தேவையா எங்களுக்கு ?

கல்லுரி முடிந்து கடல் கடந்து வந்தாயிற்று. "அக்கம் பக்கம் பாரடா சின்ன ராசா..தேசம் உனக்கு செஞ்சது ஏராளம் இங்கே உண்டு..தேசத்துக்கு நீ என்ன செஞ்சே உன்னக் கேட்டு நீ பதில் சொல்லு"..

கேள்வி 7: இந்தப் பாட்டை முக்கியமாகப் பாடி எங்களின் மனசாட்சியைக் காயப் படுத்தவேண்டுமா ?

தாலாட்டுக்களை திருடினீர்கள் பொறுத்தேன். காதலைத் திருடினீர்கள், பொறுத்தேன். இப்போது தத்துவமும் பாடுகிறீர்கள். வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு அசைவிலும் இப்படி என்னை உங்கள் பாடல்களால் விடாமல் துரத்த வேண்டுமா ? இது உங்களுக்கே நியாயமா ?

இனி எனக்கு காதலி கிடைத்து "எனக்கொரு காதலி இருக்கின்றாள் " என்று நண்பர்களிடம் சொன்னால், "செம பாட்டுடா..SPB கலக்கல்" என்பார்கள். எனக்குக் கல்யாணம் ஆனால் "நூறு வருஷம் இந்த மாப்பிளையும் பொண்ணும்" என்று அங்கேயும் ஒலிக்க விடுவார்கள். என் மனைவிக்கு "கல்யாண மாலை கொண்டாடும் பெண்ணே" என்று போட்டுக்காட்டுவார்கள். மனைவியைக் காதலுடன் பார்த்தல், அவள் "சென்யோரிடா ஐ லவ் யு" பாட்டை பாடச் சொல்லப் போகிறாள். பிள்ளை பிறந்தால் அது "தேனேதென் பாண்டி மீனே" கேட்கும்..அது இல்லாமல், மண முறிவு ஏற்பட்டால் " மன்றம் வந்த தென்றலுக்கு..நிலாவே வா"..

சரி லௌகீகம் வேண்டாம் ஆன்மீகம் போவோம் என்றால் அங்கேயும் துரத்துகிறீர்கள். சிவனைக் கும்பிட வேண்டும் என்றால் "பிரம்ம முராரி சுரார்ச்சித", கண்ணனைக் கொஞ்ச வேண்டும் என்றால் "ஆயர் பாடி". நான் இறந்து போகும் நேரத்தில் எனக்கு நினைவு வரப் போவதற்கு "மண்தான் கடைசியில் ஜெயிக்கிறது" என்று பாடி வைத்துவிட்டீர்கள். இப்படி வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு கட்டத்திலும் என்னை உங்கள் பாட்டுக்களால் பாடாய்ப் படுத்த வேண்டுமா ? அதனால்..

இத்தனை குற்றங்கள் செய்து என் வாழ்வினை முழுமையாக என் அனுமதி இன்றி ஆக்கிரமித்துகொண்ட உங்களுக்கு நான் என் மனச்சிறையில் ஆயுள் தண்டனை விதிக்கிறேன். உங்களுக்கு எப்போதாவது வெளியில் போய் விட்டு வரவேண்டும் என்றால் சிறிது நேரம் 'பரோலில்' அனுப்பி வைக்கிறேன். மற்றபடி என்னை உங்கள் பாட்டுக்களுக்கு நீங்கள் அடிமையாக்கியதற்கு பழிக்குப் பழியாக, என் மனச்சிறையினில் நீங்கள் அடைபட்டுக் கிடக்க வேண்டியது தான். அங்கே உங்களுக்கு 60 ஆண்டுகள் மட்டும் இல்லை. என் ஆயுளுக்கும் சேர்த்து தண்டனை அனுபவியுங்கள்.

I was in undergrad when this musical extravaganza hit the theatres. As usual, I did not care much for the movie but was charmed by "thangame thamizukkilai thattuppaadu". It had wonderful beats, nice beats and to top all that, it was an SPB number. But what finally settled in my heart as my favorite was en kaadhale. It is a mesmerizing rendition by one and only S.P.B. The bhaavam is unmatched ! A beautiful tune immortalized by the immortal singer!

I think I was in 6th std that time. I went to see Vaidegi kaaththirundhaaL with my mom and grandpa. This was the opening song of the movie. Made me an instant addict to Jeyachandran's voice - an effect I have never been able to recover from that, I started a series on dhool about Jayachandran to hail his rare songs:

The karaoke was much faster than the original that, at one point it made me go breathless (ya..most of my songs are 1 take recording from the first to the last). You can find it too. A war is a catastrophe. In this piece of music, I have tried to create a visualization for the war starting from the beckoning to the mourning. The war starts with the drums banging and the troupes marching in. Once the troupes face the enemies, out of sheer passion for victory and the thirst for blood they energize themselves with war cries and after that they start warring with each other. After a particular juncture the killing becomes so common and usual that their minds get numbed and they do it like normal work(the flutes). It is followed by the cruel mindless torture of innocents after the victory as they plead for mercy - but of no avail. All the killings are done without any heart.

A group of people who were untouched by the war since they were away come rushing and take a look at the battlefield and they are filled with anguish seeing the lacerated and amputated bodies with men and women crying out in Lord's name for help. Although they help the needy, they cannot control their weeping when they see vultures battling with them for the bodies - a stillness of burial ground.

Let me know if you guys are able to appreciate it. This was done entirely on the MOTIF ES 6. This was probably the second piece of music I did after getting the Keyboard.

Sendhaamarai - An old Hansdhwani Composition | Music Upload


Today is an important day for me as a musician, especially as a composer. An album named Blogswara has been released with some compositions of mine along with those of my friends. What is unique ? The album was entirely done over the net without the artists ever meeting each other face to face! All over the world a talented buch of indian bloggers, came under the intitiative of Joseph Thomas - a singer par excellence - in an effort to produce a music album which would be done exclusively for the love of music ! Serious effort with blood, sweat and time was to be there, but it would be free and serve as a primordial advocate of 'free music' !

I was one of the earliest to join blogswara as a composer/singer. I have been composing for almost 3-4 yrs with a bank close to 500 tunes, all in the need of orchestration. Finally one of them rolled out of my bag and here it is before you for your feedback. I composed and orchestrated the song and sent it to Mux Mukundan and Meera who sang the lyrics of Udhaya.

Music has a strange power. Udhaya - the poet and I - the composer/singer, have been working on many tunes for 3 or more years now without ever thinking when would all the songs that we both make, see the light of the day. If I were to quote the relation between me and Udhaya, I would lilke to recall SPB's quote on kamal - 'down the time lane there had been a soul exchange betwen us'. We may have not achieved as much like SPB or Kamal but the quote certainly applies to us. Somehow our love for tamil and music matched harmoniously and we started doing songs. Today the first one has sneaked out and our longstanding wish has come true and we are awaiting the judgement of you, the listeners!!

Meera - who came as a visitor to my blog, has become a very good friend and Mux - the ever sweet guy - has been very helpful in clarifying many things about recording and singing. When I played this song to our dhooL friends, they liked it and suggested I could put this up as SOTD.

For a guy without any kind of formal training in music, it has been an steep uphill climb. I have just left the rock bottom and started going up. The mountain that music is, grows at a rapid pace and reaching the summit is beyond dreams. But the path of exploration itself gives me immense pleasure and I am happy to be pursuing it. Dhool.com itself was one such venture with BB and this is the next phase I would like to be active in. Dhool SOTD visitors are requested to visit the album web site and listen to all the songs of my fellow artists and pat them for some of their wonderful efforts. Any comments, criticizms are welcomed with open hands. Most of us knew nothing about recording, mixing, MIDI etc, and we are learning. It is a long way, but we are crawling. We will hopefully reach a state where we can look back and say "well..that has been a long walk"

Blogswara - releases today !!!

A unifying musical endeavor in excellence sans the commercial elements using the power of net. This is how I would describe this venture which is a brainchild of Joesph Thomas ( popularly Jo) a singer with a mellifluous voice. This project may have been conceptualized by a few others, but was singlehandedly spearheaded by Jo. This venture has opened new channels to work with some wonderful artists like anup, meera, ajay and more.

Today around 2:30 pm Blogswara goes online. This is the first album in which I have donned the roles of a singer and composer. Hence I can confidently say this is my first album venture ! I seek the support of all my blog visitors to spread the word about Blogswara and enjoy the music that has been produced by the artists involved. Any feedback, positive or negative, will be appreciated wholeheartedly.
